Saturday’s Times Square shooting shows that the city can’t afford to “defund the police,” mayoral hopeful Andrew Yang said during a Sunday morning appearance at the Crossroads of the World.
“The truth is that New York City cannot afford to defund the police,” Yang said near the site of Saturday’s wild shooting, which injured three innocent bystanders including a 4-year-old girl in the hot spot to shop for toys.
“When I talk to New Yorkers I get a very different message every single day,” he said.
“New Yorkers are concerned about rising rates of violent crime, petty crime, street homelessness. This is what we are seeing, and we need our city’s leaders to step up right now.”
Four-year-old Skye Martinez was waiting in line with relatives to shop for toys at Line Friends on Saturday when a gunman arguing with three other people opened fire on the crowd, striking her and two other bystanders.
Martinez and the two other victims, who are both tourists, are all expected to survive.
Yang, who along with former cop Eric Adams leads the polls for the June 22 mayoral primary, said the incident highlighted the crucial role of police in keeping the city safe — particularly as it seeks to dig itself out of its COVID-19 economic slumber.
“Nothing works in our city without public safety, and for public safety we need the police,” Yang said. “My message to the NYPD is this: New York needs you. Your city needs you. We need you to do your jobs professionally, responsibly, and justly.”

Even do the police makes harder for American patrots to support them like before, defunding them is not an option.
The man is a typical far left, socialist type democrat. If elected, he’ll just continue his predecessor’s work of running the city into the ground.
Personally I think Andrew Yang has no chance of winning..
I wonder sometimes if someone worse than DeBlasio will win because not enough people effected by crime will actually go out and vote because they’ve been screwed so often they have given up.....
Andrew Yang has probably latched upon the one message that could bring New York City back from the morass in which they are teetering over. The Rudy Giuliani method of giving the police great support from the office of the Mayor was a major step in cleaning up that city in the 1990’s after years of neglect and indifference from the successive Democrat regimes that had control, as “Times Square” became “Slime Square” under first Ed Koch, then David Dinkins. Municipal services lapsed into an occasional thing, with garbage uncollected and rat infestation reaching astonishing levels, with both petty and major crimes running rampant.
Rudy Giuliani as mayor reversed that, and if there was one factor that mitigated the events of September 11, 2001, it was the disciplined and again respected first responders, the FDNY and the NYPD, courageously rushing INTO the chaos as it unfolded, and the example of Mayor Giuliani commanding from the front.
But now New York City has again lapsed into a swamp of intellectual laziness and a level of graft and corruptions intolerable anywhere else, as the wealthy flee and the crime wave again builds to the climatic heights of near-collapse of all city services.
“Defund the police” resonates with populations that understand they will forever be living outside civilized law; when you understand that, it is less idiotic (from their viewpoint). They will never learn a skill and thrive in the system; they will never “get right” to the point where others can live around them without fear. They’ll just continue living on the margins, surviving on raids on normals...and they don’t want to be arrested for it anymore.

Times Square stray bullet gunman who shot three was aiming for his brother: sources
The gunman who fired a barrage of rounds into crowded Times Square was trying to kill his brother but wound up wounding three innocent bystanders — including a 4-year-old girl, police sources said Sunday.
The suspect, identified by sources as 31-year-old Farrakhan Muhammad, was still on the run Sunday after turning Manhattan’s tourist hub into a shooting gallery, the sources said.
Muhammad, who peddles bootleg CDs at the Crossroads of the World, had gotten into an argument before he pulled out a pistol and started shooting wildly, sources said.
“Saturday’s Times Square shooting shows that the city can’t afford to “defund the police,” mayoral hopeful Andrew Yang said...”
Hard to call him a ‘mayoral hopeful’ after such an outburst. What next, Mr. Yang, calling for the police to start shooting blacks in COLD BLOOD?
...after all, to liberals today, what’s the difference?

“Is anybody here a social worker?!”
If that’s your brand of tourism, then try safer options like Kabul, Baghdad or Mogadishu.
So where’s Curtis Sliwa? Isn’t he running for Mayor? Crickets.
Curtis has been commenting on this. He and his Guardian Angels have done more for the city, for so many years, than Johnny-Come-Lately Andrew Yang could ever dream of. But Yang will be the next mayor because he’s advocating free money for all.
Then he should eliminate NYC taxes.
Two others who are tourists? Did they buy the: ‘I went to NYC and all I got was a gunshot wound’?
He should go back to where ever he came from.
Didn’t he just come out for defunding the police a week ago? These woke people can’t make up their minds. Ask Elon! LOL!
