The SCGOP’s big guns did not come out for the former vice president.
Former vice president Mike Pence made his first big political speech since leaving office last week – traveling to Columbia, South Carolina to headline an event hosted by Palmetto Family, a prominent social conservative organization in this key “First in the South” primary state.
-snip-
After the South Carolina event, as Pence aides trotted out “luminaries” who hailed his speech (including former SCGOP chairman Chad Connelly) several attendees told me they were shocked by the lack of big-name Republican support at the gathering.
“Where was the governor? The lieutenant governor? The attorney general?” one event attendee told me, referring to Henry McMaster, Pamela Evette and Alan Wilson.
None of those three statewide elected officials attended Pence’s speech – absences which were conspicuous to say the least.
I don’t have an answer, either … but Pence’s Palmetto State visit clearly took place amid an atmosphere of elevated uneasiness and pervasive suspicion within the SCGOP. And make no mistake: Trump loyalists are keeping their eyes peeled for politicos who come off as excessively demonstrative in their support of Pence (and other aspiring 2024 hopefuls who have displeased the former president).
“I had the distinct impression the only Trump people there were taking names,” one GOP strategist who attended the Pence event told me. “Big brother was definitely watching.”
An Upstate activist who attended the event said he caught a Trump backer “staring holes in me” at one point during Pence’s address.
“We we both clapping pretty hard,” the activist told me, recalling the intensity of this unspoken exchange. “Then I realized we weren’t clapping at the same thing.”
So … is this why McMaster, Evette and Wilson took a pass on this event?

Uhuh... a real Christian who crows about it all the time. A real Christian like Kenneth Copeland or Jesse Duplantis or Franklin Graham (and the pool boy for his wife) or Jim Bakker.
Not a Christian like Art Pawlowski who talks the talk but also walks the walk.
Franklin Graham is not who had the pool boy issue with his wife.
That was Jerry Falwell, Jr.
When we needed him the most, he caved. What in the world does he expect in the way of support from Republicans/Trump supporters?
My bad... Apologies to Mr Graham and his wife. How I confused the two is beyond me.
I knew Franklin Graham is MAGA and a Christian like Art Pawlowski.
Pence should ask Eric Cantor for a job in DC.
This made me think about an old song that goes:
Indiana wants me. Lord, I can’t go back there!
I’m not even sure Indiana still wants Mike Pence. But now I’m having a hard time getting that song out of my head.
Pence should have had the courage to uphold the Constitution. The Supremes should have too. But It’s done. I hope that Arizona turns up irrefutable proof of what we know occurred. But since the Constitution is apparently meaningless in their eyes I don’t hold out much hope.
What Pence did to this country is inexcusable. If that bastard caught on fire, I wouldn’t move an inch.
From day one, I recognized Pence as an empty suit politician. His betrayal to President Trump and America is disgusting.
agreed, never heard of him
True. And this is no time for milquetoast.
Oh great...another thread filled with comments mad at Pence because he didn’t use secret magic powers that do not exist and have never existed for the office of Vice President.
Although “milquetoast” and “yesterdays news” are accurate descriptions in the political sense.
I assume his failure to use secret, magical powers that do not and have never existed for the office of Vice President is what has you so upset with him about to viciously defame his character in this way.
Seriously, when is this lie going to stop? Read the Constitution and knock this garbage off.
I do hope the Benedict Pence runs so we can kick his ash to an appropriate level - an 80/20 wiping in a crossover state.
Concurring bump...if Pence has Presidential ambitions he'll need allies in South Carolina, especially if Niki Hailey decides to get in.
The guy who won the title of "Last guy you would want on your side in a fight."
That Mike Pence.
If Pence thought he had a future in elective politics then this should give him pause.
Disappearing Mike. At least he didn’t get in the way during the fight.
