New York City's public school system has eliminated the Columbus Day holiday, replacing it with 'Italian Heritage Day/Indigenous People's Day' while also adding Juneteenth as a school holiday for the first time.

On Tuesday morning, the city's Department of Education posted the 2021-22 school calendar online without fanfare, replacing Columbus Day on October 11 with Indigenous People's Day.

After backlash from the city's Italian American leaders, the calendar was taken offline on Tuesday evening, and re-posted with the holiday changed to 'Italian Heritage Day/Indigenous People's Day.'

IIRC, Columbus was the first to suggest slavery as a way of life in the new world.

Mass made Juneteenth a holiday as well. It’s designated as a Sunday. Typical BS move. You use holidays to draw attention to something—you don’t do that by picking a day that most people don’t work. You don’t do that by creating a “holiday” where nothing is closed.

Either do it, or don’t. This half-assed effort will do nothing but piss off people.

Yeah, well they hate Columbus for bringing Christianity to a continent which practiced child sacrifice.

I prefer the more accurate “Conquered Peoples Day” to “Indigenous Peoples Day”.

It’s celebrated by blacks in Texas as the day they found out (late) that they were freed from slavery. Why another state would glom on is puzzling. Or not.

In Texas, the slaves learned they were free on June 19th. It isn’t even a holiday for anyone but a politicized niche “remembrance”.

It is weird to say that people in the Northeast would celebrate it at all.

That’s as weird as me, a white, being asked in a marketing survey how I’d celebrate Cinco de Mayo ... OK, I live in Texas, it gets some BBQs and Mexican beer and the Mexican beer companies advertise that. Ask real Mexicans, and they’re like, “What?” For Mexican Americans, it is an early Memorial Day BBQ.
