Facebook Board Readies For Its Biggest Decision Yet: Whether To Reinstate Trump
NPR ^ | 5/4/21 | Rachel martin

Facebook created the Oversight Board a year ago to make final calls on the most difficult decisions the social network makes about what users can post. Each case is decided by 5 members of the 20-person board. They consider Facebook's rules and international human rights principles and seek out the views of outside experts and members of the public. In the Trump case, the board received more than 9,000 public comments. The final decision must be approved by a majority of the full board, and Facebook has agreed to abide by its ruling.

The Trump case is the biggest test so far of the board's legitimacy: whether it's seen as independent from the company that created and funds it, or whether it's seen as a cover to let Facebook duck responsibility.

I agree with you. I think if the government seizes control over who Facebook and Twitter are allowed to censor and ban, what’s to stop them from forcing FreeRepublic to allow bad posts to go without being removed or to allow trolls and other undesirables to continue posting indefinitely?

I think if you don’t like the website, find another. I don’t like Facebook, so I left it. I never liked Twitter. I do like FreeRepublic. Not everyone does. They should find somewhere else; not get the government to force FR to let them be a problem here.

Technically our Government cannot censor people . So how to get around this roadblock when it wants to bury annoying truths ? Simple, give certain companies special favors and allow them to become monopolies in return for said companies to do the censoring for them.

Respectfully, comparing Facebook to a bakery or hotel is a stretch. It's like comparing a railroad company to a cab driver.

"Twitter, Facebook and other social media have become so pervasive that they have become the public square—and legally should be treated as such."

They won’t reinstate President Trump. ‘We The People’ will hang out with him elsewhere and vote like maniacs for him when we get another chance. :)

I’ve not been troubled by anything that Facebook does or doesn’t do for three years. That was when I scrubbed my account. FB is a preposterous waste of time and mental energy.

You can tinker all day against the companies Uncle Sam has chosen to do its dirty censorship work but the real issue will remain: a centralized monster that already has way too much power and wants to take even more.

The solution is to restrain the beast itself . Our Founders knew it would come to this and put in Article V as a peaceful remedy. Only fear and uncertainty has kept it from being used. Now that the enemy has got to the point where it is stealing elections to stay in power we have nothing left to lose.

If they re-instate Trump, I hope refuses to join them again. At this point FB needs him more than Donald needs them.

It’s a private company they can do what they want and the slimes in Congress gave them top over with that Section 230 crap. One of the reasons President Trump wanted it gone. So then, they could be held accountable.

There’s a difference - FB is much more like a utility, given how much of the social media space it controls. Businesses don’t get to ban blacks from entering their stores, because it violates their rights. They must serve all comers.

“time to break up” Who, pray tell, is going to break them up? The Uniparty (R) senate wouldn’t touch it. Those Uniparty (R) Judases wouldn’t even vote to put them under oath. Are you expecting the Uniparty powers that be in Philly, Atlanta, Detroit, etc. to buck the Uniparty (D and R) and allow honest elections in ‘24. Yeah, that’s the ticket, Nicki Haley and McConnell are gonna bust up big tech ‘25. It’s not going to happen.

By current law they are not considered to be public utilities. They have the same freedom to publish, or not publish, as the Washington Post, New York Times, CNN, Fox News.

Then take away the protections Congress gave them. The Washington Post, New York Times, CNN, Fox News, etc. can be sued for what they publish. Facebook and Twitter can't.

“It’s a private company they can do what they want “

So, can a private business keep out illegal aliens from their store?

“Trump should tell Facebook not to bother and to go to hell.”

Agreed. In the event they restore his posting privileges he should accept them and than go on FB and announce he is hereby cancelling his account.

Then he should invite all his followers to his new site.

In a sane and just world, I would say...Absolutely.

The same way that a baker should not be forced to bake a cake for two gay guys. The same way a photographer shouldn’t have to take pics at a gay wedding. Especially when the case is demonstrably being made to cause harm and injury to the baker and photographer.

But, we don’t live in a sane and just world.

We live in a RINO, GOPe, Democrat, Liberal, Hipster, Socialist, “Right is Left, Down is Up”, fantasy that is going to collapse, sooner rather than later.

If I’m not mistaken, the President wanting to get rid of Section 230 would have solved a lot of these problems, but he got absolutely no support from anyone other than Pai, to overturn it. Too many folks in Congress, on both sides, getting those envelopes full of cash to do anything about the tech companies.

I wish it weren’t like that, but it is.

On a side note, even if they let him back on, they’ll figure out a way to get him back off within a week or less.

Tactically, Facebook is on the horns of a dilemma. They know if they ban him for life then Trump and other investors will ramp up to warp speed (DJT has done that before with the vaccine) and develop their own social media platform to compete with FB/Twitter, etc.

If FB lets Trump back on then they can hope that Trump & Co. won’t work as hard developing their own platform as they can once again use FB. It may allow FB et al. to stall for time before new workaround platforms are developed by conservatives to compete directly with them.

If I were Trump, I would continue full speed ahead with creating an alternative conservative media platform regardless of what FB does. Trump can never trust when in the future FB would once again pull the rug out from under him and ban him again on some trumped up (pardon the pun) charge.

What Trump is doing here in the near future are mere baby steps towards a true media platform, but it ain’t a true platform. Trump and other wealthy conservatives must produce a competing communications platform to go to war with libs on their own turf. Trump has to go further towards starting a real platform, not just a prototype.
