Sen. Susan Collins supports DC joining Maryland instead of DC statehood
CNN ^ | Mon May 3, 2021 | Lauren Dezenski

Sen. Susan Collins is the latest Republican with an alternative suggestion for Washington, DC's push for statehood: Join another state.

"There is a way to ensure that the residents of DC have voting representation in Congress, and that is for DC to become part of Maryland, just as parts of DC became parts of Virginia many years ago," the Maine Republican told Jake Tapper on "State of the Union" Sunday.

"That would give the residents of DC a new House member, and they would be represented in the Senate by Maryland senators," Collins said.

Washington, DC currently has more than 700,000 residents and no voting members of Congress or representation in the Senate. It has one non-voting delegate in the House. Republicans have been critical of Democrats' support of statehood for Washington DC, calling it a power grab to tip the Senate's balance of power toward Democrats, given the district's reliably blue voting record.

Proponents of DC statehood, including President Joe Biden, want the federal district to become America's 51st state. Efforts to make it so in Congress have progressed further than ever, with a DC statehood bill passing the House by a 216-208 vote in April.

Despite Democratic control of the Senate, the bill requires 60 votes to pass -- which means 10 Republicans would have to sign on to the statehood measure if all Senate Democrats support it. (And it's possible not all of them would. Sen. Joe Manchin, for example, has said he opposes the statehood bill in its current form.)

Why don’t we just stop charging federal taxes on people who live in DC?

I bet they’d opt for that.

But that would defeat the purpose of gaming the system and stacking the Senate with special appointees.

How about leaving it as the Capitol as our Founding Fathers intended?

You’d see the property values quadruple. I actually agree with that one.

Senator Collins continues to have NO understanding of our constitution or the wisdom of our founding fathers. I’d call her a moron, but I’ve known real morons (including myself in my younger years) in my seven decades of life, but that would be an insult to morons.

Retrocession. That’s all they get!

It would not give DC a new House member as it would be absorbed into some other MD House district.

Susan, The Founding fathers didn’t want Washington DC to belong to another state that Is why they carved it out of a state or several states..

Exactly, idiots like Collins immediately default to a compromise position.

I’m all for retrocession also. I’m a Maryland resident and adding the DC population to the state won’t make it any worse. It’s largely a cesspool state already and will remain a cesspool state.

Article I, section 8, clause 17 of the Constitution, says that the “Seat of the Government of the United States” shall be a district that is at most ten square miles and separate and apart from the other “particular States.”

Carve out 10 miles for the seat of government and return the rest to Maryland.

That graphic makes it so obvious DC does NOT need to be their own state.

Even the low info folks should grasp it!

Still need to repeal the 23rd Amendment unless you want to give the residents of the White House 3 Electoral Votes.

Also I think it is ‘10 miles square’ as opposed to ‘10 square miles’.

Washington, DC currently has more than 700,000 residents and no voting members of Congress or representation in the Senate.

This is an outright lie. DC has 100% representation in Congress, more than anywhere else.

Article I Section 8

To exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over such District...

Congress is responsible for the District of Columbia. ALL of Congress represents DC.

I think it’s smart of her to promote this alternative because it sensibly rebuts the Democrat talking points. The idea makes more sense and when Democrats reject it they will be exposed as the power grabbers they are.
Good for Susan.
