Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has spent millions trying to win the Kentucky Derby, and in the process plowing money into horse racing worldwide. Now with the overwhelming favorite, Dubai’s ruler faces increased scrutiny for allegations that he has violated human rights and orchestrated the disappearance of his own daughter.
The controversy, well-known in the Middle East for a more than a year, has gotten renewed attention as Essential Quality prepares for Saturday’s race. The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission received a complaint on Wednesday from a group of human rights attorneys and students at the University of Louisville seeking to have Sheikh Mohammed banned from the Derby.
The complaint asks the racing commission to bar Sheikh Mohammed from entering any horses in any races, including the Derby and the Kentucky Oaks on Friday “until such time as his daughter, Princess Latifa, is free from captivity, or (b) hold an immediate public hearing to assess the serious allegations of his human rights abuses.”

Gee, I hate having to root for a sheikh.
Maybe Princess Latifa should apple her case to Queen Latifa.
“Sheikh’s Missing Daughter” Sounds like a good name for a race horse.
Sheikh’s horse came in fourth? Oh well, that’s racing.
ROYAL MUM Who is Princess Latifa’s mother Houria Ahmed Lamara?
Note to the UK: Don't practice what you preach, do you...

they shoot horses don’t they?
And the winner is owned by another Middle Easterner, but he only paid $35k for his winning horse. No doubt, the Sheikh spent far more on his.
$35K for a Derby winner is the bargain of the century. Around here a cutting horse is $10k when it hits the ground.
Every year in September, either the Sheikh or his agent comes here to Lexington, KY to buy horses. Twice I have seen his 747 at our little airport; it is the only Jumbo Jet allowed to land here. To get a plane that big down on our runway, I figure the Sheikh must have the best pilot that money can buy.
Ocala horse is the winner. Maybe shiek should spend his millions here.
Must be bummed when the NFL draft and the Derby get more viewers than their demented President doing a state of the union speech.
Baffert has had a couple of other Derby winners that were bought cheap.
