(CNN) β The Biden administration has confirmed that the US will restrict travel from India starting on Tuesday in response to the surge of coronavirus cases and variants being observed in the country.
"On the advice of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Administration will restrict travel from India starting immediately," White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement on Friday. "The policy will be implemented in light of extraordinarily high COVID-19 caseloads and multiple variants circulating in the India. The policy will take effect on Tuesday, May 4."

The policy will not apply to American citizens, lawful permanent residents or other people with exemptions. As with all international travelers, individuals who fit that criteria traveling from India must still test negative prior to leaving the country, quarantine if they have not been vaccinated and test negative again upon reentering the US from India. The restrictions also do not apply to humanitarian workers.

The problem is, like with China, thousands if not millions from India have dual passports, US/India. Plus those with student visas and professional visas all of whom will be exempted, no doubt.
Racist, racist, racist!
Day late dollar short
They need them for the second wave that they promised
it should have been done a month ago

Oh Noes!!!!
RACIST!!!! RACIST!!!!
I threw mine in as double, even though you beat me to it. :)
Irrelevant & somewhat misleading graph.
What is relevant is what are the CURRENT normalized case rates in the portion of the population likely to travel to the US, and how many such travelers there are from each country, per day. Whether those persons are more likely to be infected by a more transmissible and / or more virulent variant is also a factor.
I’m guessing India’s case numbers are highly suspect on the low side: If some areas really are reporting 50% positivity test rates, that indicates to me that testing capacity has been overwhelmed, and the majority of people tested are persons with significant symptoms.
Perhaps the only good numbers available are those of the numbers of likely travelers. Maybe some FReeper would have those?
Beyond that, there is probably “some” information on % of cases being variants, and... It definitely appears India is on the front end of it’s first major COVID-19 wave.
Should travelers from, say, Belgium be presently restricted, or, at least, VERY closely screened? From Belgium’s current case curve I’d say “maybe”, with more details needed.
Irrelevant. See post 73.
FWIW I rather like most of the Indian people I have met, especially so those I’ve worked with either as a co-worker or as a customer of a manufacturing vendor.
But, that is also irrelevant with regard to such a National policy toward a friendly nation.
So dangerous, we have to act come Tuesday.
Nobody should be restricted from travel to and from anywhere because of Covid-19.
Period.
It’s all BS. Virus gonna do what it will. Lockdowns are stupid. Masks are stupid. Travel restrictions are stupid.
Pay me now or pay me later. Live Free Or Die!!!
Travel restrictions will put a crimp in the H1B lottery.
Employers may have to hire Americans for a change.
