President Joe Biden plans to ban menthol cigarettes despite concerns from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) that it would fuel racial injustice.
The ban on menthol cigarettes will be announced this week, according to CBS News and The Washington Post, citing people “familiar with the plan.”
The ACLU warned Biden the ban would have “serious racial justice implications” for people of color and more “negative interactions with local law enforcement.”
“Banning menthol cigarettes risks massive setbacks to our criminal justice system at precisely the moment we should be advancing reform,” the letter obtained by CBS News read.
But some public health organizations support banning menthol cigarettes because they are targeted at black smokers.
“For generations, tobacco companies have promoted menthol cigarettes to the African American community, preying especially on African American youth. The results are clear and grim,” said American Medical President Susan R. Bailey, MD said in a statement supporting the ban.

Take black people off any packaging.
Promote segregation in schools and universities.
Promote policies that destroy their communities.
White people stir up the black populous and burn their retail establishments.
Destroy the police force and remove them from black neighborhoods, leaving them to fend for themselves against drug lords and gang members.
Tell black people they're too stupid to get ID's and follow election rules.
And now, take away their smokes?
Who are the racists again?
This while they legalize weed.
I smoked Salem years ago. It would have really pissed me off if they took ‘em. BTW, not black.
What next? Ban Colt 45?
And they say we are the racists! Now they’re essentially telling black Americans what they can and cannot purchase for consumption? Kind of like the government trying to yell everyone what firearms they deem safe for us lowly peasants.
There will be violence in this country, it’s just a matter of time and guess what, it’ll not be started by the conservatives.
Wait until they find out Jheri Curl is flammable.
Without Congress being involved?
Next they’ll tell us how many flushes per household per day.
They want to micromanage you.
And then let the rioters across the nation do as they please.
This is what he did with crack?
‘
Not Kool Joe. Not Kool.
When I started smoking, I smoked menthols (Salem). At some point, I smoked too many menthols one night and found them repulsive ever after, to the point where I couldn’t smoke a menthol cigarette no matter how nic’d out I was.
If they’d made ALL cigarettes menthol, I might have quit decades ago.
The POTUS has the power to ban an otherwise legal product because it tastes different?
Not different deleterious effects mind you, but because the flavor is preferred by a certain ethnic group.
Who knew?
This must mean the Whopper can be banned and not the Quarter Pounder. Or Colt 45, but not Mickey’s Big Mouth.
How genuinely weird.
It won’t survive it’s first Federal Court hearing.

I don’t know if it is profitable enough for criminals to start producing black market menthol cigarettes. But, if per chance they start showing up, I implore all police officers not to risk their jobs or getting a prison sentence for trying enforcing the ban. Just look away on this.
You can take Salem out of the country, but...
This will come as exciting news to cigarette bootleggers! Smugglers are probably already finding reliable foreign sources, and tons of Menthols could be on their way to the US, at greatly inflated prices. Both organized crime and the Cartels could profit from this. Good going Joe!
I think it will be interesting trying to buy cartons of menthol cigs shortly. They will disappear.
This isn’t the Babylon Bee???????
Why??? I don’t smoke but what’s wrong with menthol? Doesn’t it make the cigarette taste better? Or seem healthier?
