Biden Setting Federal Minimum Wage At $15. Executive Order Doesn’t Include Past Promise On The Issue
https://dailycaller.com ^ | April 27, 2021 9:29 AM E | CHRISTIAN DATOC, SENIOR WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT

Posted on 04/27/2021 7:08:19 AM PDT by Red Badger

President Joe Biden will sign a new executive order Tuesday that will raise the minimum wage for federal contract workers to $15 an hour, from the current rate of just under $11.

The new order will be fully implemented by March 2022. The White House said that Biden’s planned action doesn’t include a past pledge to instate a new benefits package into federal contracts.

Biden originally signed an executive order Jan. 22 that directed the Office of Management and Budget to provide him with options for both instituting a $15 minimum wage and providing “emergency paid leave to workers.”

Pressed on the issue by reporters during a briefing ahead of the Tuesday signing, senior administration officials officials confirmed that emergency paid leave was not included in Tuesday’s order but could still be addressed at a later date.

The administration could not answer exactly how many workers would see increased wages once the order is implemented but estimated hundreds of thousands of existing and new workers would be affected.

Officials also shrugged off a question that the higher wages could lead to a potential decrease in worker productivity by claiming the order “would enhance worker productivity and then create higher quality work by boosting workers’ health, morale and effort.”

The order itself mandates a $15 minimum wage appear in all new federal contracts for employees beginning in January 2022, and existing employees can begin renegotiating contracts to the $15 rate in March of the same year. The order also adjusts for inflation after 2022 and restores minimum wage eligibility to guides and outfitters working on federal lands and extends it to federal contract workers with disabilities.

“Does he have the authority to do that?”

He cannot spend one thin dime without Congressional approval. I sincerely doubt that there’s some secret stash of sufficient size that he’s authorized to use, which can pay a higher minimum wage for many tens of thousands of federal workers for weeks let alone months or years. Another question is whether this EO will cover federal contractors.

In short, he has no authority to create law like this. This is pure theater, aimed at the truly economically illiterate.

You know, it really is getting to be time to separate into two countries - one based on common sense, actual science, morality that’s been common to most of Western Civilization for hundreds of years and an affirmative patriotism that puts the nation first; the other will be run by Democrats and their idiot voters who believe in none of those things.

That’s the problem: These entry level jobs were designed to be part-time and for teens, young people and in my area retirees - as an entré for the non-skilled into the working world. MacDonald’s taught these workers valuable skills such as showing up on time, cleanliness, neat appearance, listening to a boss or manager. College allowed them to move out of those jobs into something better. The opportunities are there.

Problem is, too many adults that have these minimum wage jobs consider them careers, and have no intention of “bettering themselves” and moving up - and demand a living wage.

The leftist call private businesses “greedy corporations,” just as the Soviets did, and demand they pay a $15/hour wage. The supermarkets and corporations are fighting back by mechanizing as much as possible and using self-service whenever they can.

This is especially acute in California where the local pols have driven up minimum wage - along with oppressive regulations.

Yep.

They don’t call in sick all the time, come to work high or drunk, smoke pot in the parking lot, aren’t rude to customers, count change accurately and aren’t on their phones all the time.

I use them as much as possible, I find them far more efficient, quicker and more accurate with my order.

I was in a local toy store on a Saturday morning before a kid’s party buying a gift. The line was long and almost to the back of the store.

The frazzled store owner was working alone, as fast as he could - I jokingly asked where all his help was.

He said he couldn’t find anyone to work on Friday nights or Saturdays, all the kids applying for jobs specifically put this on the application and that is exactly when he needed help.

They’re hurting the very people they purport to serve.

Note to the working poor: With friends like this, who needs enemies.

Trump had record low unemployment.

Deep State didn’t like that, did it.

Deep State is the enemy.

If we ever get a chance at an honest election again, vote accordingly.

I’ll do it myself with the exception of ONE woman that works at my Walmart who I really like, is a great conversationalist and we’ve gotten to be friends.

If she’s not working, I use the self-check. I’ve also started using their grocery shopping and pick up program. Man, it’s awesome!

I don't think so - I know at least in California when draconian minimum laws are passed, it means ALL businesses must pay that wage - one of a zillion reasons businesses flee my home state.

Recently a local city council mandated that grocery stores had to pay "hero pay" to their workers - easy to do when it isn't YOU that has to pay the extra wages - supermarkets run on a 1-2% profit margin:

The war began when the L.A. City Council passed a law mandating that grocery store workers receive a temporary “hero pay” $5-an-hour salary bump for 120 days to compensate them for working during the pandemic. Supermarket mega-corp Kroger balked, and its execs decided to teach L.A. a lesson by closing two of its Ralphs supermarkets (Ralphs is the dominant grocery chain here in SoCal).

David Cole explains it better than I ever could here:

LOL, my brother said the same about Home Depot - he orders from his phone, drives up, they bring out whatever it is he needs and even load it up for him. He says he'll never set foot in their store again.

Sister says same about CostCo.

Now, I'm going to go work on my garden so I can take some beautiful photos for the gardening thread on Friday!!

Having worked in poultry slaughtering plants before,
$12 an hour is VERY cheap. Hard work, bad conditions, low moral.

One reason I buy local chickens.

Executive orders were once, properly, just reiterations to enforce CURRENT laws passed by Congress, not novel laws yet to be passed. Yes, this is unconstitutional.

Value of $15 falls to $3.00 in 1960 dollars. Film at 11. Figure made up, but probably over-optimistic.

That being said...we all know they are going to try to raise the Minimum Wage...

And will hurt all retail/wholesale business...

I doubt the number is more than 200,000, which is what? .06% of the population.

"This is the new business model, permanent."

I'm down with that, because that will flood the pool of waiters/waitresses to the point that the restaurants that still offer wait staff will have either the best or at least the most pliant and compliant.
