President Joe Biden will sign a new executive order Tuesday that will raise the minimum wage for federal contract workers to $15 an hour, from the current rate of just under $11.
The new order will be fully implemented by March 2022. The White House said that Biden’s planned action doesn’t include a past pledge to instate a new benefits package into federal contracts.
Biden originally signed an executive order Jan. 22 that directed the Office of Management and Budget to provide him with options for both instituting a $15 minimum wage and providing “emergency paid leave to workers.”
Pressed on the issue by reporters during a briefing ahead of the Tuesday signing, senior administration officials officials confirmed that emergency paid leave was not included in Tuesday’s order but could still be addressed at a later date.
The administration could not answer exactly how many workers would see increased wages once the order is implemented but estimated hundreds of thousands of existing and new workers would be affected.
Officials also shrugged off a question that the higher wages could lead to a potential decrease in worker productivity by claiming the order “would enhance worker productivity and then create higher quality work by boosting workers’ health, morale and effort.”
The order itself mandates a $15 minimum wage appear in all new federal contracts for employees beginning in January 2022, and existing employees can begin renegotiating contracts to the $15 rate in March of the same year. The order also adjusts for inflation after 2022 and restores minimum wage eligibility to guides and outfitters working on federal lands and extends it to federal contract workers with disabilities.
Just an excuse to give everyone in Government a raise ?
Why do we even have a Congress and a Senate when a POTUS can just about push and enact near anything with an Executive Order, why!?!?!?
And EVERY UNION MEMBER......................
Looks like retail and restaurant businesses are already preparing for this.
Went to IKEA over the weekend and they’ve just installed new self-service registers for check-out, eight of them. Whole Foods just did same and WalMart has expanded theirs.
Forget trying to find someone to help you in Lowe’s - they run on a skeleton crew - and self-check out.
Kids wanted to go out to newly re-opened restaurant over the weekend - you down load one of those funky codes - order straight from your phone, it goes directly to the kitchen and the kitchen workers bring it to the table - no waiters or waitresses, only kitchen and clean-up people from what I could tell - also seat yourself, no hostess with a menu.
This is the new business model, permanent.
Yep.
Does he have the authority to do that?
How about at least doubling the Social Security income of people that were retired despite their demanding training, to match at least the lowest value (approx. $2,600 per month) of the most ignorant untrained federal Igor-type fetchits?
So lazy ass government employees get a raise. I guess they deserve it. They have done an excellent job of destroying freedom, liberty and the economy. They are doing exactly what they are asked to do.
At the rate prices are going up, that move is irrelevant.
When I left work at 5:00am Monday morning, my McD’s was closed due to no staff. But so was the Denny’s, right next to a major US highway.
How many brain dead types will think it compels every employer to pay $15/hour?
ALL of them........................
Yup.
I remember an old cartoon from the 1950s. A doctor tells his patient “You are as sound as a dollar! Which is not too good at all!”
And that was the 1950s. Soon our dollar bills will be as worth-less as those of Germany in the 1920s-early 30s, Zimbabwe and Venezuela today.
I always thought that any spending had to originate in the house of reprehensibles.
ALL of the local restaurants, both FF and Eat-in are having staff shortages.
The DQ had a sign at the Drive-thru (inside Dining area not open):
PLEASE BE PATIENT, WE ARE UNDER-STAFFED.
PLEASE BE COURTEOUS TO THE WORKERS WHO DID SHOW UP.
NOBODY WANTS TO WORK ANYMORE......
I actually do not have a problem with Biden setting the minimum government wage at $15 per hour. As executive, cheated to that role or not, it is his perogative. The quality of workers, etc. and their productivity is another matther entirely.
