House Passes Bill Proposing to Make Washington, D.C., the 51st State

WASHINGTON—The Democratic-controlled House approved legislation Thursday that would make Washington, D.C., the 51st state, but the bill faces an uphill battle in the Senate amid broad Republican opposition and hesitation from some centrist Democrats.

Proponents cast the bill as civil-rights priority, saying the city’s residents deserve full self-rule and representation in Congress. Critics call it a power grab by Democrats to gain two more senators and point to possible constitutional hurdles.

Thursday’s party line vote of 216-208 marks the second time the House has approved the measure, which is backed by the Biden administration. However, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) hasn’t committed to bringing it up for a vote in the Senate, where current rules require 60 votes for passage and only 45 of the 50 Democrats are currently sponsoring the legislation.

“I believe strongly in D.C. statehood, and we will try to work a path to get it done, absolutely,” Mr. Schumer said Tuesday when asked if he intended to bring the legislation up for a vote. But he didn’t provide any time frame.

Were the bill to become law, most of present-day Washington, D.C., would take the name State of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth, in honor of Frederick Douglass. An area around the White House, the Capitol and the Supreme Court would remain as a two-square-mile federal area under the legislation. D.C. would be the first new state admitted to the U.S. since Hawaii in 1959, and proponents have already designed American flags that fit 51 stars.

Supporters say that residents of Washington, nearly half of whom are Black, deserve the same representation as other Americans. Residents pay federal taxes, register for selective service and fight in the military, but they don’t have a full voice in Congress and local leadership can be overruled by the federal government

“Never tear down a fence until you understand why it was built.”

There is little true human wisdom in our house these days.

Only if they take the surrounding counties in Northern Virginia with them, so Virginia can flip back Republican.

D.C. residents have no representation in Congress?

Give it back to Maryland from whence it came.

Problem solved, no additional RAT senators needed.

>>It’s time to admit it: America as we have known it is gone.<<This bill has a long way to go. I don’t think it will pass the Senate. But, who knows.

At some point for certain, we will need to admit that we can no longer co-exist with the leftist.

...give it back to Delaware??? We never owned that s-hole and have enough trouble with our own degradation as swarms of people move in here from NY and NJ to further aid the corruption of our government which is already puke blue.

"Supporters say that residents of Washington, nearly half of whom are Black, deserve the same representation as other Americans. That is easily solved...

By retro-cession of the Metro-DC (residence/business area of DC) back to the originating donor state it came from, which is Maryland. Those complaining ‘disenfranchised’ will have their dream for representation/participation as full citizens of the state of Maryland! PRESTO!

Congress has NO authority to transform by vote, ANY part of the existing DC into a state... ZERO! The ONLY authority congress has is to vote to cede Metro-DC back to Maryland if the business/residential population want representation.

Lopping a part of DC off and claiming statehood is complete NONSENSE and ruse. The only interest bt democrats for doing so is political and for power! Typical Dem ploy. They can’t win on argument and ideas at the ballot box, so they rig/game the system to take/steal power.

Two quick questions.

1. What will be the capitol of this new state?

2. “New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new State shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or Parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress.” -Article IV sec.III

After Washington D.C is dis-incorporated, the land not designated Federal would be given back to Maryland and Virginia. Would not their legislatures have to vote to give up that land? Or do we not follow the most basic laws of the land?

Sorry three questions.

If representation of American citizens is the issue (and we know it is not) the area outside of the Biden Armed Encampment in D.C., could be annexed by Maryland or Virginia. No new seats in the Senate.

And speaking of the Biden Armed Encampment, have they installed the moat yet? Are the sharks with freakin lasers on backorder?

If DC becomes a state than I propose that every sitting Senator with a home in DC should be considered a DC resident and they are no longer able to represent their former home states but all all eligible to run for one of the two open Senatorial seats.

Another “solution” is to get rid of ALL the current states and instead make the existing counties into individual states.

We will then have over 3000 states and 6000 senators (most will be Republican).

NEVER FORGET:

This is happening because of RINO-controlled state legislatures who refused to enforce voter ID and did nothing to stop the cheat-by-mail-in ballots being forced on the electorate.

Stop blaming Democrats and take your rage to the Republican primaries and VOTE OUT THE RINOs. Unless we have conserative controlled state legislatures, we will never take back the WH. It is the ONLY way forward.

The State of Jefferson deserves to be created a LONG TIME before any phony state is created out of the national capitol.

If the Angry Africans of DC want more shakedown power, they can become part of Maryland and Virginia again.

We don’t need a “Capitol State” that thinks it’s first among the States. NOBODY agreed to that in 1787, or should now.

But Shoomah wouldn’t know that since his family wasn’t here and wouldn’t get here for another 120 years.
