So I’m hearing that all Dems in the House voted for this? OMG.

Manchin has already said no

You're going to put your faith in that lying POS?

Manchin does not have to face the voters again until 2026. He only voted to confirm Kavenaugh because it was right before the 2018 mid-Terms. As soon as he was safely back in power, he voted twice to impeach Trump.

Suppose Manchin keeps his word...

What about Murkowski?? That biotch knows she's dead in the water with respect to winning re-election, so she can stick it to the GOP all she wants with no repercussions. She's already broken ranks to approve some Biden nominee in a 51-49 vote. She was the only republican to vote with the Dems.

Something would have to be done. I don’t imagine the denizens of Washington DC proper have much of an income or property tax base by itself.

100% symbolic. It’s not legal and will never happen.

On the other hand, if we could get the states to ratify Article the First, we could completely destroy the Democrats for the next 2 generations, at least.

If we’re lucky, they’ll annex northern Virginia.

Why do you say that?

Yup this is what happens when Republicans are more worried about the media than the people who voted for them.

This is what happens when you betray your own guy in office and let Democrats steel elections.

How can a District become a State?

According to the U.S. Constitution that is illegal. If DC belongs to any State, then it should be Maryland. This is since the Potomac river is the dividing line between Maryland and Virginia.

Don’t be surprised if we see secession in some States.

No kidding.

Doesn’t the constitution (and Federalist Papers) make clear DC is the seat of the federal government, and not a state among equal other states.

Basically, “The Constitution sets only a maximum size, “not exceeding ten miles square,” for the federal district that is the “Seat of the Government of the United States” (Not a state).

“Clause 17. Congress shall have power * * * To exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular States, and the Acceptance of Congress, become the Seat of Government of the United States, and to exercise like Authority over all Places purchased by the Consent of the Legislature of the State in which the same shall be, for the Erection of Forts, Magazines, Arsenals, dock-Yards, and other needful Buildings”

I know, I know, who you going to believe, your own eyes and logic wherein the US Constitution defines DC as the seat of the federal government and is not a state. Or are you going go with what demoncrats FEEEEL is right?

“The Convention was moved to provide for the creation of a site in which to locate the Capital of the Nation, COMPLETELY REMOVED FROM THE CONTROL OF ANY STATE. . .Madison noted that “[t]he indispensable necessity of complete authority at the seat of government, carries its own evidence with it. . . . Without it, not only the public authority might be insulted and its proceedings interrupted with impunity, but a dependence of the members of the general government on the State comprehending the seat of government, for protection in the exercise of their duty, might bring on the national council an imputation of awe or influence, equally dishonorable to the government and dissatisfactory to the other members of the confederacy.”

Why not just make any enclave with a majority of minority residents a state? If it is a civil rights issue and square mileage does not matter. Better yet why not grant them sovereign nation status. Take the pesky U.S. right out of the equation. Federal aid becomes foreign aid. Simple.

Say what you will, the democrats are a well disciplined mob, supporting each other at all times (with rare exceptions).

This thread has been rehashed so many times on FR. From what I recall, it boils down to DC not being founded as a state but a district and short of a Constitutional amendment, it can’t be a state legally.

“Don’t be surprised if we see secession in some States.”

I hope so..and you wouldnt have heard me say that BEFORE the SCOTUS failed to take ANY of the cases from this last election.

Especially those that involved those states that had their election laws changed by “other people” than their legislatures.

By retro-cession of the Metro-DC (residence/business area of DC) back to the originating donor state it came from, which is Maryland. Those complaining ‘disenfranchised’ will have their dream for representation/participation as full citizens of the state of Maryland! PRESTO!

This is the only fair solution. DC is a very small place. It just does not measure to statehood. Returning it to Maryland has a precedent. Alexandria was a part of original DC, was returned to Virginia 1846. Why not return the rest of DC to Maryland?

Wouldn’t D.C. Statehood require a Constitutional Amendment, since the lands were set aside for Federal use in the Constitution?
