They don’t care if what they’re doing doesn’t make sense.

Agree. If we are going to keep them deployed, why not keep them where they can stabilize Afghanistan?

FWIW - I want to bring them all home. It is easier (and cheaper) to go back in and bloody their nose than it is to occupy and try to rebuild a country that is not able to function on its own.

Moving to neighboring countries provides the opportunity to spend billions or tens of billions on the move.

Then there’s this gem: “…the United States would remain an active participant in the construction of a democratic Afghanistan in a civilian capacity even after troops leave”

That’s going to work out real well, as always. The only democracies the US created were Germany and Japan after complete and total destruction.

It’s the old ‘now you see them, now you don’t’ sleight of hand ploy. By doing that he can say he took them out, even though in reality he didn’t.

Translation:

When Trump ordered the withdrawl, we had to scramble quickly to secure our profits in the Opium and Meth trade, $10-$15 Billion a Year. Now that Biden is in charge he realizes we need more time to secure our products and we will stay close by to make sure our products get to market and we get paid.

A democratic Afghanistan? I sure hope the Biden administration is just trying to save face. Because a democratic Afghanistan was an impossible mission from day one. So let’s not spend even one more American life or one more American dollar chasing that dream.

As a side note, I won’t be too tough in Biden here. He is roughly in the same position Nixon was back in 1972. The inevitable collapse in Afghanistan will all be on George W. Bush.

They're far less likely to be attacked in neighboring countries. Afghanistan is hardly a functioning nation - just an area marked out on the map, filled with squabbling, angry people whose religion preaches violence.

Antiwar party loves war and the war machine when they are in charge. So as we pretend to surrender on 9/11, we are actually going to spend billions hiding out in other countries as our own border is being overrun by colonist alien invaders.

I am not in basic agreement with the idea, for two reasons.

1. The very idea is an admission of failure - the status quo of a semblance of democratic government in Afghanistan cannot be assured after the U.S. leaves. Why publicly telescope such an admission.

2. The Taliban, and others, knowing it is transparent attempt at subterfuge (we are leaving, but if the Taliban “misbehaves” we will be nearby and may take action from afar”), will, when they feel threatened again, make targets of the U.S. forces planted in neighboring countries; expanding their internal Afghan civil war to those countries, and possibly igniting major U.S. actions in Afghanistan again. The end condition could be as if we never left.

If the Biden administration goes through with the idea, I would like to see them find agreement for it with just one country, India. It would expand our growing alliance with India and it will irk the hell out of Pakistan. Both of those things are good things - long term - in my opinion.

If instead Biden makes the new basing deal with Pakistan, those bases will be attacked by the Taliban’s friends in Pakistan - guaranteed.

Russia may have something to say if Biden is looking for deals with the other “stans” north of Afghanistan.

Then the remaining options are back where we already have a large presence - Qatar. Yes, Qatar, where we have the largest U.S. presence in the Middle East, and yes that’s Qatar who is so friendly with the most radical fundamentalist “rebels” in Syria, and yes that’s Qatar where the Muslim Brotherhood makes its HQ.

Any bets?
