They got real used to that relationship where they lie to us, betray us, do nothing for us and then we vote for them again and again because they hold leverage over us. I disagree with your statement that just about every President up to Reagan possessing a strong sense of nationalism. Woodrow Wilson and the Presidents from FDR to Carter, with the partial exception of Eisenhower, were committed to internationalism, including helping establishing the United Nations and other worldwide institutions like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. After World War II, we engaged in two long no-win wars, with the Korean War directed by the U.N.
