Biden Administration Considering Rule to Cut Nicotine in Cigarettes

Subheading: Policy could be paired with proposal to ban menthols; FDA must decide whether to pursue menthol ban by April 29

The Biden administration is considering requiring tobacco companies to reduce the nicotine levels in all cigarettes sold in the U.S. to levels at which they are no longer addictive, according to people familiar with the matter.

Administration officials are considering the policy as they approach a deadline for declaring the administration’s intentions on another tobacco question: whether or not to ban menthol cigarettes.

....

Nicotine itself doesn’t cause cancer, heart disease or lung disease, according to the FDA. But it hooks people on cigarettes, which are linked to 480,000 deaths in the U.S. each year.

....

Lowering nicotine in cigarettes has been a subject of discussion inside the FDA since the 1990s. It can be done in different ways, such as genetically modifying tobacco plants or stripping nicotine from the leaf in the manufacturing process. In 2009, the Tobacco Control Act authorized the FDA to mandate such a change, stipulating that the policy be based on scientific evidence.

Use to smoke. Bad results after 30 years.
No basement dwelling a**** ....... and I’m convinced getting paid to come up with stupid, stupid ideas. There are much more serious things to worry about. The F****** a*****democRATS want to ban or suppress whether it’s good or not.
Ex: Drag queens ok. Tobacco, bad!

Yep, it is well known that blacks prefer menthol cigarettes.

So now people will smoke more to get the desired kick.
That is not an improvement.

Thanks to you and several others that point to the possibility that smokers will act to keep their nicotine intake at their comfort level, generating higher taxes.

I feel silly for not thinking of that. But, if they really mean “reduce to non-addictive level” rather than some gradual adulteration/reduction schedule, there’s going to be a major black market in cigarettes and especially nicotine.

So, nicotine itself would have to be restricted, or possibly just taxed heavily like alcohol.

Remember when the FSC (fire safe cigarette) was made mandatory? It would self extinguish when not “hit” with regularity.

This caused cigarette sales to increase for two reasons. Smokers were less inclined to leave a cigarette laying in an ashtray for very long and if it did go out, most smokers have a rule about not relighting a cigarette that has went out. Fire up a new one.

So I suspect the Feds want to increase cig sales to increase tax revenue as less nicotine per cigarette will just cause one to smoke more to get the same nicotine amount.

You’d be surprised how many current smokers discourage others from starting.

Way too much $$$ in cigs for the Feds to want to curtail sales.

Tax revenue from the sales and increased customers for the health care industry as many will have health issues.

Yes.. And interesting I found when an acquaintance, who enjoys smoking, started rolling up her own cigarettes with pipe tobacco a few years ago in order to escape all the additives...... she said the first thing she noticed was her morning cough went away.....also that she can no longer handle smoking manufactured cigarettes.

They could give a d*mn about the millions that will be dying of this filth

Just like those hypocrites (you?)who don't give a damn about the casualties of alcohol consumption that destroy more lives and families in a year than tobacco products have in the past century.

So where is the real filth, tobacco or alcohol?

It would only make people smoke more to get the same nicotine fix. Thereby more income from already outrageous state and fed taxes

Non smoker here.

since menthol flavoring is especially popular in certain demographics, will there be accusations of racism?

.....................................................

They wouldn’t dare do it to menthols. Never!

Tobacco companies won’t care so much they have a large amount of sales in weed Ind. but you can bet big time the Biden administration won’t request to lower the THC count in weed.

What a wonderful way to create a black market.

.................................................

From what I’ve heard and read, that market has been thriving for years in NYC, Probably in other big city and blue states as well.

The greatest decline in lung cancer for those that can not quit smoking is vaping. Vaping has risks but small. Smoking has great risks not due to nicotine but the other constituents of tobacco in the tars.

Nicotine is not a carcinogen. The tars in tobacco are a carcinogen. It is really that simple.

ps
Being addicted (nicotine is addictive as I well know) to vaping is of minor health issues compared to smoking tobacco which I most miss 20 years later.

A fine “Brasila” oddly not made in Brazil with a friend and good whiskey at the end of the day is just plain damn perfect. Alas I smoke no more. When and if my doctor says my days are few, I will damn well smoke them again often.

Smoking cigarettes is easy. Appreciating fine cigars is an art.

pipe tobacco

It is the same tobacco, just cut for a pipe.

The tubes used when making your own do not have the fire retardant.

Besides the morning cough going away, the cost for a pack is 75 cents.
