House to Vote on Whether to Make Washington DC a State on Tuesday: Committee
The Epoch Times ^ | April 16, 2021 | JACK PHILLIPS

The House of Representatives will vote on whether to make Washington, D.C. a state on Tuesday, April 20, according to the House Committee on Rules.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) previously said that the House would attempt to vote on the bill during the week of April 19, which is next week.

It came after the House Oversight Committee, chaired by Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.), voted to advance the measure—House Resolution 51—earlier this week by a 25–19 vote.

According to the bill, the U.S. capital would be shrunk to include the National Mall, monuments, the White House, Capitol Hill, and other federal buildings. The rest of D.C. would become the 51st state called the “Washington, Douglass Commonwealth.”

A similar version of the bill was passed in June of last year but was stalled in the Senate, which was then held by Republicans.

If the House passes the bill next week, it is expected to stall in the 50–50 Senate, namely because Republicans—who comprise the minority—can use the 60-vote filibuster. Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) said in a statement that his Senate counterpart bill, S. 51, has 44 Democratic co-sponsors.

However, Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) did not sign on to the bill. Both have also signaled they are opposed to eliminating the filibuster.

After the bill’s passage in the House Oversight Committee, Maloney said, “Statehood for D.C. is about equality, fairness, and ensuring that the dreams of our Founders are realized despite over 200 years of delayed justice.”

But Republicans said that it is a “power grab” by Democrats who are trying to permanently shift the balance in their favor.

“The Democrats are so greedy to permanently tilt the political balance of power in their favor that they have presented us with a laughable D.C. statehood proposal,” Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) said in...

Nothing seems to be in their way.
Next goal: Puerto Rico, most likely. Another vagabond state.

Under this idiotic proposal, the District of Columbia would still get 3 electoral votes but nobody would be registered to vote there except the President and First Lady (if they make it their primary residence) and any homeless people who claim to be living among the national monuments.

If we still had a Constitution they would need an amendment.

There always seems to be a few designated Republicans who cross over and vote with the Democrats. I wonder who it will be this time.

They are out for permanent power, and they mean it. They do not care about the nation, Justice, Freedom, the ravages of authoritarianism, or anything else. They want a chokehold, forever, on the $20,000,000,000,000 we produce annually, so they can skim the top 30-70% off for themselves and their friends.

Romney (UT), always... and I think this time it's Collins (ME) or Murkowski's (AK) turn to join him now... but Lee (UT) and Lummis (WY) are waiting for theirs as well.

The desperate level these Democrats have been showing themselves to inhabit fully legitimizes the concept that they already stooped to cheating on massive scales

Cheating in other ways is completely consistent with it.

Oh, well, I guess those “moderates” will hold the line. Lol

It's dead on arrival in the Senate, fortunately. In fact, there may only be 44 votes for it because there are only 44 sponsors. No more than 48, maximum.

We’ll have the first Fake State.

If D.C. gets in, you'll see Republicans boycott the election in 2022. There'll be discussions of secession in Florida and Texas. But I doubt D.C. will get in.

Lots of other problems pointed out in this article, including exactly what you were eluding to.

https://www.heritage.org/political-process/report/dc-statehood-not-without-constitutional-amendment

[Finally, the 23rd Amendment problem under the shrinkage plan becomes perhaps even more disturbing. Without a constitutional amendment repealing the 23rd Amendment, the literal handful of residents in the shrunken “District constituting the seat of government” would control their own three electoral votes. For those who depict statehood as a matter of “fair representation,” this is a little embarrassing.]
