Liberty University is suing Jerry Falwell Jr. The school is seeking millions in damages after an acrimonious breakup with its former leader last year
Liberty University has filed a civil lawsuit against its former leader, Jerry Falwell Jr., seeking tens of millions in damages after the two parted ways acrimoniously last year.
The complaint, filed Thursday in Lynchburg Circuit Court, alleges Falwell crafted a “well-resourced exit strategy” from his role as president and chancellor in the form of a lucrative 2019 employment agreement while withholding damaging information from the evangelical school about a personal scandal that would explode into public view the following year.
“Despite his clear duties as an executive and officer at Liberty, Falwell Jr. chose personal protection,” the lawsuit says.
It also alleges that Falwell failed to disclose and address “the issue of his personal impairment by alcohol" and has refused to fully return Liberty’s confidential information and other personal property.
Falwell responded to a phone call from The Associated Press on Friday with a text message saying he was not available to talk.
It wasn’t immediately clear if he has an attorney representing him in the matter. The AP left a message seeking comment with an attorney who has represented him previously.
Falwell's departure from the Virginia university in August 2020 came soon after Giancarlo Granda, a younger business partner of the Falwell family, said he had a yearslong sexual relationship with Falwell’s wife, Becki Falwell, and that Jerry Falwell participated in some of the liaisons as a voyeur.
Although the Falwells acknowledged that Granda and Becki Falwell had an affair, Jerry Falwell denied any participation. The couple alleged that Granda sought to extort them by threatening to reveal the relationship.

What a mess Jerry Falwell Jr. and his wife turned out to be.
Parents can only do their best in raising their kids. Each individual makes his/her own decisions in life. Even if they decide to follow their parents’ advice it’s still up to them. He banked on his father’s good name but ended up being just another crook, in the long run.
If I recall he is the one who said his only sin was “committing adultery with his eyes.” Which we all took to mean that he sometimes looked at pretty girls.
Then it turned out that it meant he enjoyed being in the room and watching as another dude did his wife.
Jerry Falwell Sr. was no choir boy, either.
This is the type of suit where both sides lose, the Christisn community is demoralized, and only the lawyers get rich. Settle it. Now.

Catholic church child sex scandals, upper church echelon’s conspiracy in covering up these abuse scandals, church banking scandals, protestant pastors falling in such grandiose ways doing the same tells me that there is indeed a God.
So sad that the evil of men wound others within the faith. Wound children that will spend a lifetime recovering and wondering to find God again. I pray for the church. I pray for the wounded in spirit.
