One of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s favorite expressions is “real time,” as in something actually happening at the moment. Well, as a second dry winter has occurred and precious little rain and snow fell, the drought is suddenly real time for Central Valley growers. They face the prospect of not having enough water deliveries for their crops.
That is exactly why Newsom should issue an emergency declaration. The crisis Valley farmers face is real, as is the threat to the farm-based economy of California’s heartland.
It is most dire in the central San Joaquin Valley and south. Growers in the Westlands Water District, along the west side of Fresno and Kings counties, are only going to get 5% of their annual allocation from the federal Central Valley Project
Central Valley Project users north of the Delta will only get 5% of their contract supply, and State Water Project contractors will receive just 5%...
To put it another way, the California Farm Water Coalition notes that 2 million acres of irrigated farmland in the state — one of every four acres — has had supplies cut by 95%.
The coalition likens this year’s situation to 2015, when 540,000 acres were left unplanted, 21,000 jobs were lost and the state experienced an economic loss of $2.7 billion...
The lawmakers asked Newsom to meet with them, and act so water transfers can be made quickly, as well as financial assistance given to food producers.
But unfortunately, the drought is a real-time reality. Newsom would do well to meet with the legislators and act on their concerns. He should issue the emergency declaration to help farmers. And, like it or not, he needs to get the attention of all Californians that, indeed, here we go again.

There is state and local water in the SJ valley, in addition to the federal project water discussed here.
It’s been a dry couple of years. Everyone will have less until the next flood.

Why California is not utilizing the ocean by building Desalination installations along the coast is beyond me.
Not only would it create jobs and bring another source of clean water to the state but the water could be pumped to the area’s in need....
Sounds better than the money wasted on the train to nowhere they’ve used millions on already.
The worst wildfire danger typically occurs after a wet winter and spring because ground cover grows profusely and then dries out later in the year. I got in an argument about this with my grandson who works as a wildland firefighter, last year.
It is a little hard to believe that it was that much drier than normal in most of California because in the Northwest we have 50% more snow-pack than normal. For some reason we repeatedly get inaccurate data from California. I do not know if this is the situation this year, but it would not surprise me.
Without human intervention, California would remain semi arid.
All that ocean and so few desalination plants just think of how many they could build if they used all the money they spend on the illegals.
I think the best way to alleviate this problem is to dig aquifers next to commonly flooded rivers. Use the rest of the wet season to slowly dredge the mud within. Then during a drought, pump the water back into the river.
It can’t be cost-prohibitive to use them; counties poorer than the USA use them.

Of course, it probably displaces some USA ‘sand flea’ that the Greenies DEMAND be protected, so there ya go. ;)
Agree Ca. state leaders have their head in the sand when answers are in front of their face.
