Probably so. But if trump would have said in March 2020, wear the dang mask, he’d be president today.
My classic example is cigarettes. Plenty of people dislike cigarettes. They used to be common. People smoked everywhere. Now they are mostly gone. And a lot of people are super pleased about that. "Because they're bad. The government was right to take away our freedom."
The principle should be important.
Government control over the minutiae of your life isn't a good thing. If you accept the concept that the government "owns" you, then you're likely to end up wearing a pointless mask as a handy identifier of your sheep-like personality.

Tony Fauci is an immunologist. He has no formal background in epidemiology and he has never held a position that has anything to do with epidemiology (except that as head of NIAID he has to administer a grant process which includes some epidemiologist's applications).
He also (by the way) has nothing to do with CDC, which is a branch of the Public Health Service.

Playing “us?” The majority of “us” is more like it. Neither myself or most of my friends ever wore a mask and never will. If an establishment required a mask to receive service I didn’t require their service.
Most people don’t care much one way or the other about minor inconvenience of wearing masks while shopping, and most people don’t care about restaurants or bars at all.
