The battle must be fought by the determined heart and mind of America's great salt of the earth Conservatives.

Nothing remains of the movement except for a scattered few who dig talking about tax rates and how best to cut social security benefits.

What remains of traditional conservatism?

Most of Texas, the same for a few other States.

We are pretty much America now.

Unless the people in the prog States get very serious they are California screwed.

Personally, if I could change my name from ConservativeInPa to NationalPopulistInPa I would do it. (I don’t want to change my name again. I already did that once.) I am finished with being just a conservative. The times have changed. I am fine with being a nationalist and a populist since both share conservative principles.

“the populist desire (left and right) for a single, national community in which all persons and all ideas and all social norms are subordinate to the whole.”

Exactly which populists on the right desire this?

The deterioration of true conservatism went rapidly down, when ex Trotskyite James Burnham, who perhaps never rid himself of some of that philosophical poison, became the guru of WF Buckley and those involved in National review and ultimately most Republicans.

Now? We have the managerial revolution in control of our political class and American corpoations.

Our only hope for a resurrection of true Conservatism is to immerse our selves in its history from ancient times and its wisdom

Traditional conservatives passed away. They left the movement in the hands ofvestablishment stooges who mouthed words they never fought for. Just remember boehner and ryan and the budget deals where kicking the can down the road was their way to hide their raging liberalism.

And we bought it. Hated it. Hated always losing.

Then...Trump.

Forget about being "conservative" and just develop a good old American hatred for all things government. Somewhere along the way conservative talkers and politicians started liking government just as much as leftists. Government is not the answer, pretty much ever. We need to be the party of NO, HELL NO and OVER OUR DEAD BODIES BUT YOU FIRST NO.

Quit worrying about being nice and sounding like a statesmen and start saying no and stepping on necks. We need to gut government not cut it. We need so little government absolutely no one is interested in holding office. Understand that government like Botox is actually a deadly poison and it's only beneficial if strictly controlled in very limited amounts. It's Gotox. Government Toxin.

"“In Him, we move and live and have our being,” the Stoics and St. Paul assured us."

Since when di the Stoics talk about 'Him', and when did the Stoics and St. Paul agree?

n politics, we witnessed a nearly overwhelming wave of populism—always with its authoritarian and cult of personality leanings—on the left and on the right.

Really? both sides are populists. They all do it. This is crap.

“Traditional conservatism” was associated with traditional rural societies. If you live in a city or suburb, traditional conservatism may not have gotten very far.

It sounds like what Birzer is talking about isn’t politics, but religion or ethics or psychology or good manners. Politics conform to the actual existing state of society, which isn’t given to piety or reverence for tradition. The government is necessarily going to be bigger than it was in 1789 and society is necessarily going to be less tied to traditional values and constraints than it was in the past.

It’s over.
Nothing has been conserved.
You are along on your little conservative island, your conservative neighbor is not willing to lift a finger to help you, less his own little island be threatened.

Good luck making it to the hole without the aid of genocide.

We can’t let the GOP or the MSM determine that answer.
