Older donors who gave a few hundred dollars to former President Donald Trump's reelection campaign said they were shocked to see thousands drained from their accounts. Refund requests jumped in the final months of the campaign. The ensuing surges in credit-card-fraud claims associated with Trump got on the radar of the US's biggest banks.
That's all according to a New York Times investigation published Saturday that detailed a recurring-donation scheme it said was referred to as "the money bomb," which the Trump campaign used to pad its coffers in the final months of the campaign through the GOP fundraising platform WinRed.
The tactics included added pre-checked recurring-donation boxes at the bottom of fundraising emails and an opt-out, instead of opt-in, system for recurring donations, The Times reported. As time drew closer to the election, the recurring donations went from monthly to weekly. And the fine print by those bright-yellow donation boxes became smaller and more confusing, leading to donors, including many older ones, unknowingly signing up to give thousands in contributions, the newspaper said.

Asking for recurring donations is a common practice for Democratic campaigns and nonprofits too, but the Trump campaign's methods were particularly alarming to many experts.
"Groups do this all the time in a nontoxic way, and, of course, Trump, being Trump, did this 72 million times in the wrong direction, and it started to look like fraud," Beth Rotman, the national director of money in politics and ethics at the advocacy group Common Cause, told Insider.

I donated to President Trump. I had absolutely no problems with the website or my debit card. What the h-— is this about? But then again, the NY times can lie with impunity.
bs
This is part of their firewall for 2024. They will continue to report because we all know the only fraud worth reporting, or that exists, is republican fraud.
“The tactics included added pre-checked recurring-donation boxes at the bottom of fundraising emails”
The RNC was doing this. This appears to be a standard practice in political campaigns across the board. I always made sure that block was not pre-check.
The RNC did this to my mother via mail. The RNC was charging her account a monthly donation.
No need for a barf alert here. I don’t know if the scheme was set up by the Trump campaign or the RNC, but I can attest that the information in the NYT report is accurate. It all ties to the “WinRed” payment scheme set up last year for GOP campaign contributions.
They are gearing up to railroad Trump into prison.
How many Page 17 retractions or “corrections” have the Amazon Compost and the NY Slimes published lately regarding the President?
Probably some moron who didn’t read the clearly marked box that authorized ongoing donations.
These communist media outlets are as bad as terrorists. They are destroying our nation.
I donated to Trump’s campaign several times throughout 2020. I noticed in the Aug-Oct 20 timeframe when I would uncheck the “make this a recurring donation” box, the box would automatically re-populate with at checkmark after a few seconds. I figured it was just a glitch in the software.
RedWin is the agency that collects for the real Trump and they do have a box, {that the donor has to uncheck} that provides a reoccurring donation.
If you are smart enough to donate via computer, you are old enough to read and see what you are donating.
If you make a mistake and don't stop the reoccurring donations you can get a refund, so that this fraud crap, is just that, crap.
We donated too. you HAD to watch for the “recurring” donation button when sending any / every donation.
We missed one or two - but that was OUR fault for not scrutinizing the form. Didn’t feel like a victim at all.
I think it was WinRed. I had to get a new debit card. I told the Greitens campaign I’d be happy to write a check but wouldn’t use WinRed. Could this be tied in with the scandal surrounding Trump’s data guy?
Yes, this happened to us with a small donation we made to the NRCC. In checking our visa card activity we noticed it was recurring, called the visa card people to stop payment, and some time later received an apology letter.
I think it was WinRed.
I had forgotten about that organization. They were a bit shady but I donated just once to Corky Messner but still had no problems. I had these problems with Hulu. I’ve canceled 2 times but they keep signing me up. About every 4 months I check the credit card bill and there they are. I call and they credit my account. They can’t even explain it. If it happens again, time to get another replacement card.
The GOP/RNC was stealing money while they let the dems steal an election
“ It all ties to the “WinRed” payment scheme set up last year for GOP campaign contributions.”
It happened to me ($100 if I remember correctly). I went to the site, which had both chat and a phone number available, told them it happened and a cheerful young lady apologized and refunded it right away with the promise it wouldn’t happen again.
It didn’t.
“The tactics included added pre-checked recurring-donation boxes at the bottom of fundraising emails and an opt-out, instead of opt-in, system for recurring donations...”
So basically, the same tactics that every single subscription service uses to sell their subscriptions nowadays. Including, of course, the New York Times. I doubt they disclosed that in their “investigative report” though.
Did your account have more money taken out than you had authorized?
