Love Reins Us In

Bible in a Year:

It is better not to . . . do anything . . . that will cause your brother or sister to fall.

Romans 14:21

Most young Samoan boys receive a tattoo signaling their responsibility to their people and their chief. Naturally, then, the marks cover the arms of the Samoan men’s rugby team members. Traveling to Japan where tattoos can carry negative connotations, the teammates realized their symbols presented a problem for their hosts. In a generous act of friendship, the Samoans wore skin-colored sleeves covering the designs. “We’re respectful and mindful to . . . the Japanese way,” the team captain explained. “We’ll be making sure that what we’re showing will be okay.”

In an age emphasizing individual expression, it’s remarkable to encounter self-limitation—a concept Paul wrote about in the book of Romans. He told us that love sometimes requires us to lay down our rights for others. Rather than pushing our freedom to the boundaries, sometimes love reins us in. The apostle explained how some people in the church believed they were free “to eat anything,” but others ate “only vegetables” (Romans 14:2). While this might seem like a minor issue, in the first century, adherence to Old Testament dietary laws was controversial. Paul instructed everyone to “stop passing judgment on one another” (v. 13), before concluding with particular words for those who ate freely. “It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother or sister to fall” (v. 21).

At times, loving another means limiting our own freedoms. We don’t have to always do everything we’re free to do. Sometimes love reins us in.

Reflect & Pray

When have you seen people limit their freedom for the sake of other believers in Jesus? What was that like? What’s difficult about those situations where love reins us in?

God, help me to see where I need to encourage others to experience freedom and how I need to limit how I use my own freedoms.

My Uncle, William A, Clark, Jr., was in action at Schofield Barracks on December 7, 1941. He was in Pearl City, on leave, and got back to the field in time for the second wave. He was an anti-aircraft gunner with little ammunition to return fire with. His unit had been given orders, from San Francisco, to store all ammunition underground, two weeks before the Japanese attack. Until the day he died, he believed and said, “ the attack was planned and our Washington leadership, Roosevelt, Marshall and all, knew it was coming THAT DAY!”
Read, “At Dawn We Slept,” it is a strong support of his beliefs.
As my Mother always said, “Roosevelt was a Rotter!”
Cheers Kathy!!!

Good evening, ML...((HUGS))...any luck with getting some Blue weather?

We’ve had several days of nice sunshine and a bit above freezing. But now comes a storm and a couple nights below zero. I’m over the winter and snow.

Thanks Kathy, it’s been rough couple days.
Not only for the back but some damn flubug that got me.
Might even just be a nasty spring cold.
Been taking many Theraflu and Alka Seltzer cold plus fizzy tablets.

Felt better today so should be good tomorrow

Good evening, radu...and thanks for helping honor our troops.

Are you still having nice weather? Did the cold come again?

We had mostly sun today with some melting, but they say snow is coming this evening bringing a couple sub-zero nights.

Howdy, luvie.

I hope your evening’s going well.

It’s been a hot, calm day here but our eyes are on the radar as storms move through. Nothing severe at this point but winds could still be a problem. Maybe we’ll be lucky and not have problems.

Hey there, Kathy.

Yes, we’re still having nice, warm weather though storms are coming through tonight. Some rain this weekend but as long as it’s warm, I don’t care! LOL
They say we’ll have highs in the 60s next Wed. and I guess that will be dogwood winter slipping in. Not cold but cooler than the upper 70s we’re enjoying until then.

I saw that it was clear enough there to be able to see Mt. Denali earlier. Not so clear now though. BRRRRRR on the sub-zero temps in store for y’all. I hope that doesn’t last long!
