The Arkansas House and Senate have overridden Gov. Asa Hutchinson's veto of the anti-trans SAFE act.
The bill is now law, making it the first anti-transgender law in the United States.
It's now a felony in Arkansas to prescribe trans youth puberty blockers, hormone-replacement therapy, or gender-affirming surgeries.
Arkansas on Tuesday passed the first anti-trans law in the United States, despite the governor's veto on Monday.
The Arkansas House and Senate voted Tuesday to override Gov. Asa Hutchinson, who said the state's anti-trans bill, which bars minors from receiving life-saving medical care, was "extreme."
The House voted 72-25 on Tuesday to advance the "Save Adolescents From Experimentation (SAFE)" Act, HB 1570, over the governor's objections. Minutes later, the Senate voted 25-8 in favor of the bill, making it law.
The legislation bars doctors from prescribing puberty blockers, hormone-replacement therapy, or gender-affirming surgeries to trans people under age 18.
On Monday Hutchinson vetoed the bill, saying it was "overboard, extreme, and does not grandfather those young people who are currently under hormone treatment."
"The most recent action of the general assembly is off-course," Hutchinson said Monday.
He said he'd spoken with trans people, national leaders, and medical professionals before deciding that the bill was misguided.
In vetoing the bill Hutchinson said he expected to be overruled, but added: "I looked at this and thought, 'Where do I want my voice to be?'"
Activists are appealing the law before it takes effect
The American Civil Liberties Union said it plans to appeal the law before it is due to come into effect in July.

Pro child bill, anti-freakshow.
Hurray for the Arkansas Legislature!!! Has cloning of Spines been perfected yet? If so, perhaps this could be applied to the state legislatures in Georgia, Arizona, Nevada, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, etc...

Wow.
Business insider is really pissed that children won’t be chemically mutated and castrated to suit fickle whimsy.
Next stop for the leftists: the courts
I pity the young kids whose parents have no clue about holding
off to let their child grow up, before making such life altering
decisions.
Some parents seem to approach the issue like deciding to or
not to send the kid to summer camp.
It seems that some of these Republican governors have a self destruct button. Its best that they activate it before they achieve national power. Tucker was magnificent. Hutchinson was obviously lying when asked if some corporate entities contacted him and influenced his decision.
Agree.
He kept citing "limited gov't" and the decision of the parents and the doctors, as though the parents aren't the groomers and protagonists in this horror story, who search out sympathetic, hack "doctors" willing to play along.
what an a-hole. Hiding behind the words ‘limited government’. What utter b.s. Like this abomination is legitimate. He is advocating a ‘hands off’ approach on mutilation of children, as if the parents and the leftist doctors have the well being of the child in mind when in reality they are ALL SICK.
Asa for those of you who don’t know is a graduate of the Conservative Christian Bob Jones University.
He’s come a long way, baby.
Did he say on “Tucker” that he wants to change the name of his alma mater to:
“Roberta Jones University”?.....sarc
They [the children] are not being treated. They are being mutilated. Either by drugs or by surgery. The State has an obligation to save from harm [help] those who cannot help themselves. The Law Makers in the State of Arkansas were only upholding their obligation. I have no doubt that a Federal Court will overturn it. Such is the state of our Nation and the people in it.
On the gay marriage legislation to protect religious dissenters some years back Hutchinson’s opposition was right behind Walmart CEO Doug McMillon’s.
Illegal for abusive parents and quacks to make medical war against the DNA of a minor?
HUZZAH!
Any over/under on when an Obama judge will sign an injunction against the law because it violates the spirit of the 28th Amendment?
Tucker asked Hutchinson more than once if he'd been contacted by big biz about the bill.
The answer seemed a tad evasive; and, I do suspect that Tucker is onto something.
I also suspect that Hutchinson has just (politically) self-terminated.
And, major potitive props to the brave Ark. Legislature. .
Not as good looking as Kristi, so Hutchinson won’t find apologists for his veto quite as easily.
