Excess Deaths Jump 23% in US in 2020, Mostly Because of COVID-19 Damian McNamara April 02, 2021 Editor's note: Find the latest COVID-19 news and guidance in Medscape's Coronavirus Resource Center. The United States saw nearly 23% more deaths than expected during the first 9 months of the pandemic, and almost three-quarters of those deaths involved COVID-19. For comparison, the death rate increased by 2.5% or less annually in recent years. At the same time, rates of deaths from heart disease, Alzheimer's disease or dementia, and diabetes also increased from March 1, 2020, to January 2, 2021, especially during COVID-19 surges. "Excess deaths surged in the east in April, followed by extended summer and early winter surges concentrated in southern and western states, respectively. Many of these states weakly embraced, or discouraged, pandemic control measures and lifted restrictions earlier than other states," lead author Steven H. Woolf, MD, MPH, from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in Richmond, and colleagues wrote in a Research Letter published online April 2, 2021, in JAMA. COVID-19 mortality included all deaths for which it was cited as an underlying or contributing cause in records from the District of Columbia and 49 states. North Carolina was excluded for insufficient data. More Than Half a Million Excess Deaths Between March 1, 2020, and January 2, 2021, the United States experienced 2,801,439 deaths, or 522,368 excess deaths. A total 72.4% of these events were attributed to COVID-19.

Not all racial and ethnic groups were equally represented. For example, the rate of excess deaths was higher among non-Hispanic Black populations, at 208.4 deaths per 100,000. Non-Hispanic White populations experienced 157 deaths per 100,000, and Hispanic populations experienced 139.8 deaths per 100,000. Further, non-Hispanic Black individuals accounted for 16.9% of the excess deaths but only 12.5% of the US population, which reflects "racial disparities in COVID-19 mortality," the authors note.

(BUT BLACKS POPULATION IS 12% MORE LIKELY TO BE OBESE THAN THE WHITE POPULATION )

Not adjusting for population aging is a potential limitation, as was reliance on provisional data and the likelihood that some death certificates were inaccurate. In February, Anthony Fauci, MD, chief medical adviser to President Joe Biden, stated that political divisions likely played a role in the 500,000-plus COVID-19-related deaths in the United States. Then a report came out on March 26 indicating that a different US response to the pandemic could have avoided almost 400,000 COVID-19 deaths. In addition, an April 1 study in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report revealed that COVID-19 is now the third leading cause of death in the United States, after heart disease and cancer. "Massive" Excessive Mortality "There is no more visible or alarming manifestation of the toll of the COVID-19 pandemic than the deaths it has caused. In this issue of JAMA, Woolf and colleagues provide updated analyses that demonstrate that the excess mortality in the US between March 1, 2020, and January 2, 2021, has been massive," Alan Garber, MD, PhD, wrote in an accompanying Editorial.

"It seems likely that COVID-19 will have contributed to nearly as many deaths in the US as the great influenza pandemic of 1918, and more than in any influenza outbreak in the US since then," added Garber, provost of Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This study of excess mortality illustrates what is at stake, he added. "Despite the scientific, medical and public health progress of recent decades, the loss of life attributable to the COVID-19 pandemic exceeds the mortality of major wars. No nation should squander this opportunity to do what it takes to prepare for the next one." Woolf and Garber disclosed no relevant financial relationships. The National Institutes of Health supported the research through its National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences and the National Institute on Aging. I believe I saw mortality rate data a month or two ago indicating that 2020 was actually a good year. Mortality rate dropped. Fewer deaths. People isolated, fewer colds, flu, pneumonia, it was a happy story. Which, of course, is extremely inconvenient since we are in the middle of the greatest public health crisis in history. But they are now coming out with new statistics which tell the story that fits the official Narrative. Move along.

The medscape article states that there were 500K+ excess deaths due to Covid

The comparision to the 2018 death count is trivial.

Perhaps I am reading this incorrectly

Well gee whiz!!! Ain’t this amazing!! The excess deaths for 2020 almost EXACTLY matches the reported deaths attributed to China Virus. And yet 90%+ of all deaths from the CV were in the 75 yr old and over group.

But then the CDC has admitted only about 6% of deaths associated with the CV have as a sole cause the CV. That amounts to about 35-40,000 dying exclusively from the CV.

An old expression comes to mind. “Figures lie and liars figure”

As one freeper here commented this info was promulgated to fit the current narrative and not the other way around as would be normal.

You’re being bullshi**ed and I’m sorry for you that you cannot see this.

You are not reading this incorrectly. Alex Berensen and other solid journos have confirmed that the overall mortality for the US did NOT increase during the pandemic. Ironically, several categories of “cause of death” decreased dramatically as deaths with underlying conditions were all classified as Covid when it was also heart disease, bronchitis, chronic obesity, or severe diabetes.

It is one of the strange things that few talk about in the last year.

Didn’t CDC stop publishing influenza data because there weren’t enough cases to track?

Imagine yourself being a medical doctor with an IQ of 200 and with many degrees in medicine, a genious. Now, imagine you finding a cure for Cancer, Heart Disease, Old Age and Automobile accidents.

You might call your cure “Covid-19”.

Can you explain to me why I see that 500,000 more people than “normal” died in 2020 yet you say there was not an unusual number of deaths?

Serious question. I see the Covid has replaced cause of death for basically flu and pneumonia and etc - but still it seems to me we had 500,000 unexpected deaths last year. Or did we.

Yes and I should have been clearer above. The mortality rate for those 75 and over increased in 2020. The rate for those under 75 remained largely unchanged according to numbers from John Hopkins.

Covid is real. I do not deny that. The “increase” came from the increased mortality rate for the elderly.

The “fact-checkers” on the left have padded the numbers. The “fact-checkers” on the right minimized the numbers. The truth is likely somewhere in the middle, but what I just wrote is undeniable.

There is NO discernable change for those under 75 based on the John Hopkins data. There are other factors that impact these numbers such as a legitimate decrease of accidental deaths due to lockdowns such as auto accidents.

The CDC played games with the numbers because of “orange man bad” so it depends on which data set you subscribe to. When the government agrees to pay, without question, every hospital or care provider for a “Covid death” you incentivize them to classify it as such.

In the end you can make up your own mind and it might largely depend on who you get the data from. Respectfully.

Yes, in the “reporting” the yearly killer known as influenza pretty much disappeared in 2020 and early 2021.

Some of that might be due to social distancing and lockdowns, but it is still there. Several notable epidemiologist not on the “expert list” for CNN or MSNBC have stated that influenza is more deadly than Covid for most Americans.

Again, it’s hard to quantify right now because there is a lot of propaganda on both sides.

more lying statistics for sensationalism. they left off the first 2 months of the year from the equation or 480,000 more deaths that lowers the death rate from their 23% to actual 15%.

First of all they are comparing 2018 to 2020. They should be comparing 2019 to 2020 to be closer to accurate. People age, and are living a bit longer, so a 2 year gap could account for an increase in raw numbers of deaths.

They should also compare population size. Excess deaths as a percentage of the population. If the population is 5% higher, then expect roughly 5% increase in deaths. And maybe censor out those under 18 from both groups.

As for obesity, and overweight in general, at least according to BMI calculators I’d bet more than half the population is overweight or obese. So if half the deaths are related to the overweight or obese, then it may be a meaningless statistic.

Finally I believe I read that the average (or median) age of death in the USA is roughly 78 years old, and the median age of death with covid is also roughly 78 years old. So aside from the fact that it doesn’t appear that death with covid is reducing life expectancy, they need to look at the population size of the elderly in both years. Sure, younger people die too every year but if the elderly are more vulnerable, then to confirm the thesis they should compare deaths of people say 65 and up in 2019 to 2020, or even 70 or 75 and up.

Data is provided through the 48th week of 2020. So far in 2020, the CDC reports that 2,877,601 people have died. At the same point in 2018, the number was 2,606,928, and in 2019, it was 2,614,950. The number of deaths to this point in 2020 is at least 260,000 greater than either of the past two years.

I would like to see a year over year change in death rate going back several years, maybe a decade. With an aging population it seems natural for an increase in the over 75 age group. I wonder if 2020 would have a noticeable spike in the otherwise normal ramp up.

2020 – 72 (life expectancy through most of my lifetime) = 1948 (baby boom taking off)
