OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- An Asian couple from Oakland had much of their life savings stolen and their home ransacked after they were tied up by robbers in front of their 7-year-old daughter. What one robber said to the family at the end of their terrifying ordeal shows the economic struggle for some during COVID-19.

Awful.
What happened to Asian lives matter?
Suddenly we’re spinning the COVID angle?
(Yeah - I know why)
I’m sure white supremacy is responsible for this.
I can think of some reasons: 1) They don't trust banks. 2) They have reasons where they are having trouble opening an account. 3) They have some tax issues that the Franchise Tax Board will drain their account. 4) They are afraid of some other type of lien.
I know people who have bought gold planks as their life savings strategy. No tax avoidance since they purchased with after taxes income.
This is nothing new whatsoever. I grew up in New York city, lived in every borough except Staten Island and black violence against Asians was and is as common as table salt. The question to ask is why is it getting publicity now?
Call me a conspiracy nut but I think a lot of it has to do with the currently occupation of our government by Biden and the rest of the domestic enemies which are owned by the Chinese. The Chinese are trying to protect themselves. They are getting nervous about occupying a foreign country where a lot of citizens have guns.
Big reason to avoid bank accounts is that to open one you must provide as social security number. The reason for that if any fraud is committed the government can access those funds. Keeping one’s life savings at home creates some suspicions.
Just imagine if the whole country knew that Fauci is the cause of COVID.
It’s an Asian thing - you wouldn’t understand.
As Nick says later, a lot of them don’t trust banks. (And Some are probably trying to avoid taxes.)
But a lot of it is simple distrust. When I worked with elderly Black people in DC, a lot of them didn’t have bank accounts, and did everything in cash. They just didn’t trust banks.
(I”ve seen Indian people in my neighborhood spending big cash on Gold Jewelry. They may think that it’s a way to transfer wealth to something easier to carry and barter...)
...behind every blade of grass...
Asian culture promotes saving. Read somewhere Far East savings were about 35% of GDP. The Gov. was not pleased at the time.
I’ll bet with you that they have troubles with sales tax and the Franchise Tax Board.
There is a former resident from the Victorville, CA area that fled the USA back to Pakistan owning almost $1mil in sales tax!
I would bet much of my life savings that racism or COVID-19 had nothing to do with this. It probably had a lot more with people who keep their life savings in their house.
My father passed away in August of 2020. As I am the only child I had to empty his rented house of all it’s furniture.
Hidden in his recliner was 34K in cash. He kept it at home because he thought it would make him ineligable for state aided prescription coverage.
It’s in my gun safe now. Not really sure what I want to do with it.
Every house anyone builds or renovates should have a built-in, well-disguised hiding place for valuables that doesn’t look like a conventional safe.
One motivation I might have for not depositing money in a bank would be that all deposits over $10,000 must be reported to the government. And if you make deposits of less than that amount to avoid having to report them, you might be charged with "structuring," a form of money laundering. I have heard horror stories of cash-only entrepreneurs whose lives were ruined by "structuring" charges.
Didn’t see an age for the boy with the sneaker collection that was stolen. I wonder how many of his friends talked about that.
Chinese save cash. Real cash. They even carry cash.
I hear some of the Cambodians and Laotians do too.
And black hoodlums know this.
Ergo, “hate crimes” where the perp can never be identified.
Campesinos (illegal farm workers) carry large amounts of cash on their persons (for obvious reasons), making them targets for scumbaggery (and dirty cops).
