The Army has awarded Microsoft a contract that could be worth almost $22 billion for its futuristic goggles that give soldiers a new way to see the battlefield.

Known as IVAS, the acronym for the Integrated Visual Augmentation System, the goggles project 3D terrain maps over what soldiers see directly in front of them and allows troops to see in the dark, through smoke and even around corners.

On Wednesday, the Army announced that it had awarded a 10-year production contract to Microsoft for the IVAS system potentially worth $21.88 billion.

I hadn't heard about the Development Contract. I guess they have these things ready to go. Ready to deploy.

Microsoft has been leading in VR for a while. This is not the first time the military is using VR for simulations.

Some of the stuff they do is pretty awesome....far better than any video game out there.

This is not to praise Microsoft, but to just marvel at the tech.

Having spent 33 years in the military/industrial complex I seldom saw a military contract that did not have a huge component of corporate welfare and social justice tacked on. A perfect example was the huge tanker program that was given to Boeing without adequate notice and competition. Also, Boeing was was not offering a tanker the AF wanted. It was well known that Boeing routinely offered a job to the government negotiator on large contracts. Also, the law said that if a contract was awarded based on fraud, it was automatically cancelled. Donald Rumsfeld had the negotiations bugged. The job offer was negotiated, with perks like a corner office, etc. Rumsfeld waited until the contract was awarded, called fraud, and had it cancelled. Thus began the Rumsfeld must resign campaign. At issue was who controlled the military’s money, the Sec Def, or Congress.

This definitely feels like the same sort of contract. It’s Congress buying Mycroft’s political support. A lot of that money will find its way back into waiting pockets.

To be fair, Microsoft’s focus is on AR, not VR. Augmented Reality is using see-through headwear to project information over the user’s visual field. They’re used in healthcare and manufacturing, and this is just Microsoft’s latest industry.

Look up “Hololens.”

The goggles will black out and lock their headsets when they see Chinese troops ahead of them on the battlefield. This will ensure their victory and a kill

Related story from yesterday had this line:

It follows a $480 million contract Microsoft received to give the Army prototypes of the Integrated Visual Augmented System, or IVAS, in 2018. The new deal will involve providing production versions.
