March 31 (UPI) -- The large-deck amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli completed its Fitting Out Availability and awaits sea trials, the U.S. Navy announced on Wednesday.
The FOA on the ship, the Navy's second in the America class, concluded last week in San Diego, Naval Sea Systems Command said in a press release on Wednesday.
The sea trials will involve performance validation, including "navigation, damage control, mechanical and electrical systems, combat systems, communications and propulsion applications to ensure mission readiness."
"The combined post-delivery and Tripoli team completed six months of depot-level work on time, a significant accomplishment in this COVID-19 environment," Capt. Joel Lang, Tripoli's commanding officer, said in the release.
The ship, 844 feet long, was commissioned in 2020, and is meant for use in landing and supporting ground forces in amphibious assaults.
The USS Tripoli, however, is what the branch calls a "more aviation-centric platform," with Joint Strike Force capability modifications which include use by Marine Corps' F-35B aircraft.
The America-class of amphibious assault ships, which includes the Tripoli, is designed to put a Marine Expeditionary Unit ashore using helicopters and the Marines' vertical-takeoff-and-landing aircraft.
It can operate as a flagship for an expeditionary strike group, similar to conventional aircraft carriers, according to the Navy.
The class of amphibious assault ships employs a hybrid-electric propulsion system, using gas-turbines for high speeds and diesel-electric engines when operating in situations that require lower speeds close to shore.
The ship, designated LHA-7, still has its Post Delivery Test and Trials phase, Final Contract Trials and Post Shakedown Availability before eventually joining the fleet, the statement added.
"The crew is ready to take the ship to sea to complete bow-to-stern testing to prove the combat effectiveness of assault carrier 7," Lang said.
Agreed
I agree. They are just targets for the growing China submarine force. That is what the US should be building, stealth subs by the dozens. We need more Tridents - so many that China/Norks/Russia would be encircled.
Plus, need more attack subs to support them. I forget what the latest attack sub designation is - Los Angeles?
As for transporting Marines, we could use more air carriers instead of putting them on those amphib ships. As submariners say, "surface ships are targets".
Big deck carriers are still needed to project air superiority. They have a huge escort group to protect them. I don't know what amphib ships have regarding escort nowadays. I do know in my time on LPH-11, we traveled without surface escorts, but sometimes a sub. We all knew if hit by a torpedo in the right spot, all 600 of ship's crew and 2000 Marines would be facing Davy Jones.
The last big deck amphib I was on that didn’t have a well deck was USS New Orleans, now razorblades.
Maybe, depending on where it hits. You're forgetting torpedoes. Hit the right spot and you can break the ship in half, as seen in the battle of Midway and other naval engagements.
Many battleships went down in the Pacific due to a singular torpedo directed amidship and just under the hull. That was the sweet spot so to speak. Hitting them just below the draft did damage, but the sweet spot is what sank them on both sides.
Yup, two in one year due to poor training, poor underway watch standing, and a pissing contest between the female OOD and the female CiC commander. None of that would have happened in my Navy, and I have sailed through that busy commercial strait.
I was on LPH-11 also in the late 70's as a flight deck Grape. Still remember the dry balogna sandwiches during O-dark-thirty flight ops while others were getting mid-rats from the mess deck below. I would do it all over again if my same Navy.
Push come to shove with the PLAN, they don’t have to lop missiles and planes at the Navy, nope. Just have a bunch of large container ships charge the fleet. And its ramming time!
Shouldn’t laugh, but that was funny.
Amazing how many Vietnam deployments she did. I was on her in 87 as a jarhead.

May tbe F-35 quals be quick and painless. Amen.
5.56mm
Hope it works.
Looks like a huge target begging to be sunk.
How many escort ships does it need?
Might be good for a hostage situation against a Third World country.
From the Halls of Montezuma to the decks of Tripoli
Some kind of Radar I bet...............
No it won't. True, it could damage it. It could knock it of commission but it would be repaired and returned to service. You know nothing about the Navy or damage control.
If you want to SINK a warship you have to inflict underwater hull damage. To do that a torpedo would have to be used. I would guess with all the WTD's shut it would take 6 or more torpedo top actually SINK the ship.
This is so funny, people act like these things are made of paper machete. I repeat myself:

Looks like the exhaust stack to me.
Fixed it. Navy ships are designed to take damaged and to be repaired. The other services don't get that. Other services don't understand that "damage control" is a Navy religion..
Every Sailor and Sailorette will have their own room and private toilet, there will be Ice cream machines on every deck and 1st run movies every night. we will be the most lethal weapon in our fabulous Navy!

Fabulous. And flamboyant.
“damage control” is a Navy religion

No need to be concerned with damage control if you’re not going to stand up to or engage an enemy. If the meeting with the Chinese in Alaska is any indication (and I believe it is because they absolutely bitch slapped us with no consequences) I don’t see this administration confronting any serious adversary. Our ships may as well stay in port.
