Suez Canal ship freed: Everything you need to know about the Ever Given drama

The Ever Given was stuck for nearly a week, but now traffic can resume on the Suez Canal.

You'll notice "Evergreen" is written across the Ever Given's body, but confusingly, that's branding for the Taiwanese company that operates the ship. Julianne Cona/Instagram

After nearly six days lodged aground in the Suez Canal, the cargo ship Ever Given was finally freed Monday, according to CNBC and ship tracker Vessel Finder. Traffic in the waterway can now resume, the canal authority told Reuters.

The Suez Canal is one of the world's most important waterways. Located 75 miles east of Cairo, the capital of Egypt, it links the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea, allowing for direct shipping from Europe to Asia. Roughly 12% of the world's shipping traffic and a chunk of its oil supply goes through the manmade canal, which has become particularly vital following pandemic-related disruptions to shipping.

Egyptian TV footage showed the ship aligned in a straight position along the canal, as previously reported by the BBC.

Thanks! I’ve been trying to stay true to my diet!

(down roughly 50 lbs in the past 15 months or so - have to do a lot on my feet several days a week). I got stuck at about 40+ lbs, now I am at roughly 50lbs down +/- 3lbs.

The good news is I’m down 70lbs from about 5 years ago.

I feel like I gave birth, to an accountant!

True. As I get older, a certain sadistic side of me seems to grow. Sorry.

How about a nice picture of 63 year old Christie Brinkley and her daughter, Sailor, to ease the anguish?

Terrorists have taken notes. It won’t even take getting it stuck on purpose. Just WMD a cargo carrier and that’s that. I am surprised this was never done maliciously before.

No need for miltary if the strategic target is the EU...or Communist China.

..."Essentially everything that goes to Europe from Asia goes through the Suez Canal,” said Johannes Schlingmeier, chief executive of Container xChange, a Germany-based container leasing and trading platform."

Even with breaking the Ever Given free, the just-in-time supply chain has caused a serious dent in auto parts arrivals affecting auto assembly completion.

Taiwanese ship blocking the canal hits Red China the hardest...real accident or warning? Who really knows...but cerain parties without ICBMs or heavy naval power surely have watched this event and it's effects unfold with keen interest

[ Billy Joel.]

Well, since you brought it up, I have to post my favorite reference to him. This is back when this guy was still funny. I absolutely love this one.

The cook and the ensuing scene still makes me laugh to tears. Had to back up and watch it 3x.

I’ve rewound the last part, to just before the kiss, about 8 times now.

I’m still laughing and crying. It’s just the kind of silly humor that I like (hey it can’t all be high-brow stuff).

That picture finally prompted me to go look up the origin of one of my favorite lines/quotes. “People sleep peaceably in their beds at night because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.”

Some to Orwell, some to Churchill, some to Marcus Aurelius, some to Kipling. Not a big fan of Kipling but the others for sure. Was interesting to find Orwell on the list he was in some ways a genius.

Each ship has a different name.

......the Panama Canal gals that were driving the Navy’s ship in the Panama Canal that night got transferred to the Fitzgerald don’t ya know! s/c

Those of us who have stood watches on the bridge of a Navy Destroyer KNOW without a doubt that the OOD is IN CHARGE when the Captains not on deck. Rumor has it that if 8 sailors had died due to their little tiff with each other instead of 7 then the Navy would have gone ahead and put a letter in their file! s/c

The collision took place around 0130 off the coast of Japan. It turns out that the Officer of the Deck (OOD) was female, the Tactical Action Officer, and the Damage Control officers were women. The top two were not speaking with one another for some reason, as such, they did not communicate about traffic in front of them.
