With a 50-50 split in the United States Senate, there are two things Joe Biden cannot afford: Democrat defections and a filibuster. Senate rules require 60 votes for cloture to move on legislation, and recent years have turned the filibuster into an obstruction tactic by the minority party.
Senator Joe Manchin, a moderate Democrat from the very red state of West Virginia, has found himself in a very powerful position. His support or opposition to key legislation could make or break Joe Biden’s agenda in Congress.
So, it’s hard not to raise an eyebrow at the fact that Joe Biden has nominated Gayle Conelly Manchin, Senator Joe Manchin’s wife, to co-chair the Appalachian Regional Commission, which is an economic development partnership with 13 states designed “to innovate, partner, and invest to build community capacity and strengthen economic growth in Appalachia.” The position requires Senate confirmation.
This nomination comes at a time when Manchin has publicly expressed opposition to extreme gun control, a $15 minimum wage, and eliminating the filibuster.
So, what exactly is Biden up to?
It is not unprecedented for the spouse of a member of Congress to serve in an executive branch position. For example, Senator Mitch McConnell’s wife Elaine Chao served as transportation secretary under President Trump and labor secretary under President George W. Bush.
But it’s hard to ignore the special circumstances surrounding Mrs. Manchin’s nomination that suggests, regardless of her qualifications, an ulterior motive by Joe Biden, or whoever it is making his decisions for him.

What do the folks in W.Va. think of their elected whore?
At this point I’ll be happy if guns are outlawed, as MAYBE THEN conservatives will figure out that Democrats are worse than less-than-perfect Republicans, and even worse than RINOs (all of whom are protecting the filibuster).
Of course by then it won’t matter, but what the hell, I’ll be through with this country anyway. Our side has already tossed it overboard.
Which elected whore?
The whore of the hour - Manchin.
Of course Biden is trying to buy Manchin.
RE: Of course Biden is trying to buy Manchin.
Yep, that’s not the question, the question is will Manchin allow himself to be bought for something as temporary as this?
You’re screwed. I’m told Manchin only votes for Republican positions when Republicans are going to win the vote.
He doesn’t have a record of voting Republican if Democrats have the winning votes.
How many opuses does this make, now . . . ?
It was the RINOs that enabled the steal. If you really believe they’re against the end of the filibuster, think again.
LOL “bought”.
Also LOL “moderate”.
My guess is that it is already a done deal. As a part of the deal of the appointment, Manchin had to agree to vote the way Crooked Joe wants him to vote on the filibuster.
“If you really believe they’re (the RINOs) against the end of the filibuster, think again.”
We understand why you need to think that.
PedoJoe is loathed in the part of WV that I’m close to.
LOATHED.
So, it’s hard not to raise an eyebrow at the fact that Joe Biden's puppeteers have nominated Gayle Conelly Manchin, Senator Joe Manchin’s wife, to co-chair the Appalachian Regional Commission,
fixed it
joek has trouble deciding what his favorite flavor of Puddin Pop is today.
Joe Biden is the most corrupt President in US history. Of course he will try to buy Manchin. The only question is whether Manchin is for sale.
I have enjoyed your FR work on keto, but you seem to be stuck in one of the stages of Denial about the assistant Democrats..
Let us see if a co-chairmanship of the Appalachian Regional Commission is the US equivalent of being Secretary of State for Wales.
Is there any desire to remove Manchin?
Thanks, but on this, you can draw your own conclusions from what we’re seeing: Manchin is wavering on supporting the filibuster, but not a single RINO is wavering. That says a lot to me.
Maybe Murkowski or Collins will join later join the Dems in killing the filibuster, and the day that happens, I’ll shut up on this, but I expect a 50-50 vote, with ALL Republicans, RINOs and the rest, holding strong against the Democrats.
We’ll see...
