Climate Anxiety Is an Overwhelmingly White Phenomenon
Scientific American ^ | March 21, 2021 | Sarah Jaquette Ray

Posted on 03/22/2021 2:31:19 PM PDT by Stravinsky

The climate movement is ascendant, and it has become common to see climate change as a social justice issue. Climate change and its effects—pandemics, pollution, natural disasters—are not universally or uniformly felt: the people and communities suffering most are disproportionately Black, Indigenous and people of color. It is no surprise then that U.S. surveys show that these are the communities most concerned about climate change.

...

Today, a year into the pandemic, after the murder of George Floyd and the protests that followed, and the attack on the U.S. Capitol, I am deeply concerned about the racial implications of climate anxiety. If people of color are more concerned about climate change than white people, why is the interest in climate anxiety so white? Is climate anxiety a form of white fragility or even racial anxiety? Put another way, is climate anxiety just code for white people wishing to hold onto their way of life or get “back to normal,” to the comforts of their privilege?

The white response to climate change is literally suffocating to people of color. Climate anxiety can operate like white fragility, sucking up all the oxygen in the room and devoting resources toward appeasing the dominant group. As climate refugees are framed as a climate security threat, will the climate-anxious recognize their role in displacing people from around the globe? Will they be able to see their own fates tied to the fates of the dispossessed? Or will they hoard resources, limit the rights of the most affected and seek to save only their own, deluded that this xenophobic strategy will save them? How can we make sure that climate anxiety is harnessed for climate justice?

Well, I'm deeply concerned about the state of "journalism".

I'd be very surprised if this was actually true. Climat change and the environment are the neuroses of the rich and privileged, not of "people of color".

why is the interest in climate anxiety so white?

See above. Climate anxiety is a white liberal neurosis. It's got some vague underpinnings in actual climate science, but it's mostly about posturing among white liberals.

I’m not sure that publication has been very scientific at all in the last decade or longer.

I’m still trying to figure out how fentanyl Floyd figured anywhere into global warming or climate change. Unless they’re concerned about the environmental impact of all the burned police cars’s, stores, houses, etc. But I don’t think that is the issue.

George Floyd wasn’t murdered. He died after a huge self-inflicted overdose of drugs. He did NOT die of asphyxiation following the cop on the neck hold-down and therefore was not murdered. Neither were Treyvon Martin, Michael Brown, or Breanna Taylor.

Scientific American is really circling around the toilet bowl nowadays. It used to be a respectable publication.

So that means an inordinate level of concern with climate change is racist? lol

"Instead of asking “What can I do to stop feeling so anxious?”, “What can I do to save the planet?” and “What hope is there?”, people with privilege can be asking “Who am I?” and “How am I connected to all of this?”

Since I'm a person of privilege, I'm glad the authorette has provided a path I can take to seek a higher understanding of the harm I have caused my fellow man.

But first I'd like to ask...was the term "authorette" raciss?

Perhaps it is a white phenomenon, but democrats pet minorities not only lack the mental capacity to get IDs or do math, but are not able to understand that they are hardest hit unless democrats condescend to them

All people pollute the planet. Whites have just been brainwashed to care, and to falsely believe the lie that they are to blame. Much to the delight of all the non-whites who can use it as a bludgeoning tool upon the whites.

I have worked and traveled through 36 countries across every continent except antarctica. I have noticed that the poorer the country the more trash and environmental degredtion there is. Some countries are so bad, they are nearly as dirty as southwestern arkansas

This story has more holes in than Swiss cheese. Who do these people think controls the climate? For that matter who do they think CAN control the climate?

The white response to climate change is literally suffocating to people of color.

Literally? Good heavens, there are stacks of dead minority bodies on the ground? Is Greta responsible? Should she be arrested?

The author writes as incompetently as she thinks. If white people don't care about the issue, they're oppressors, if they do, then they're oppressors. The only way to win that crooked little game is not to play it.

Do the useless clowns who write this garbage actually believe that what they're writing is true?

I wonder what it must be like to have no life, to spend the days concocting mindless, divisive, racist bullshit like this. I think it must suck mightily, especially as the years go by and you realize that you've wasted your time on chasing a mirage instead of enjoying all the wonderful, interesting and miraculous things in this world.
