Covid: Paris lockdown as France fears 'third wave'

The French capital Paris is set to go into a month-long Covid lockdown as the country fears a third wave.

Another 15 departments in the country will also be placed under the same measures from midnight on Friday.

These measures will not be as strict as the previous lockdown, Prime Minister Jean Castex said, with people allowed to exercise outdoors. France has recorded more than 35,000 new infections within the past 24 hours.

Mr Castex said a "third wave" of infections in the country was looking increasingly likely.

The situation in Paris is particularly worrying with 1,200 people in intensive care there, more than at the peak of the second wave in November, Health Minister Olivier Veran said.

The French have had a full year to expand hospital capacity.

Another “lockdown” to “slow the spread” isn’t necessary.

There’s going to be a fourth wave, fifth, sixth, whatever it takes to maintain control of the people.

They (or other wealthy countries too) could build the hospital facilities, but, you have to have the people to properly staff them. There are dang good reasons it takes several years to make a doctor, and at least a few to make a higher level nurse. Plus, health care costs are already a major drag on most Western economies, and hospital care is very expensive: Repeatedly having to care for many extra people is a serious economic problem. So is the problem of many people left for months or years with modest to debilitating damage from COVID-19 (and complications).

Proper preventive measures are MUCH better than increasing hospital capacity. But, that doesn’t mean I think lockdowns are proper preventive measures. Neither do I bolt railroad ties around my car for protection from accidents!

As much I don’t like foriegn workers, Filipinos make far, far better nurses than the new foreign nurse... the Indian nurse (whose hygiene is often questionable). India’s next big flooding of foreign labor markets is healthcare related.

Remember Duterte made a deal with Trump to let in 30,000 Filipino Healthcare workers to help with Covid and the nurse shortage. The next week, Trump met with Indian Prime Minister Modi. Those 30,000 Filipino Healthcare workers magically changed to Indian healthcare workers (thanks to pressure from Jared Kushner)

Used to have many community college-based/ institute based US training facilities for nurses.

Foreign students dominate these as well. American doctors can’t get residencies, as those are earmarked for foreigners in many cases.

Oh my God!

Are they not vaccinating? It their vaccine worthless?

This is insanity.

As harsh as it may seem, these lockdowns are like a slow burn.

I predict the third wave will be a dud.

Now the fourth wave, whoah, look out, the fourth wave will be a doozy.

“Are they not vaccinating? It their vaccine worthless?”

Yes and no. What do expect when you try to “vaccinate” in the middle of a pandemic with a virus that mutates within 10 hrs and it only takes 3-5 days before you can shed and spread. You can’t. You get immune evasion ie: variants. You also have effectively removed the evolutionary brake that inhibits more virulent strains. Its a no win situation.

Covid virus invades via lungs. Keep lungs strong with regular aerobic exercise. That will kill the virus more effectively than any other means. But alas, I seldom see people over age 60 in the gym.

The gym I attend is well-frequented by senior citizens. Most are not there at the crack of dawn, as they are retired and tend to go mid-morning.

All I see at my Gym are young people with great looking bodies, who really do not even need the exercise, but are there just to show off. But I go to the Gym in the evening.

Good to hear you do see seniors at the Gym in morning.
What percentage of seniors visit Gym in your guesstimate?

It’s hard to believe that six months is not enough time to train people to treat a one disease.

But more to the point, I’d be curious to know if the French even tried.
