US officials who are ready to fight China over Taiwan don't understand how much is at stake

US defense officials are increasingly warning of the potential for conflict with China over Taiwan.

There is almost no way in which the US could intervene in that conflict without devastating losses.

Many of America's leading military and political figures have issued increasingly alarmist warnings in recent days about the potential for conflict with China, especially related to issues surrounding Taiwan.

But before the US gets into a crisis that brings it to the threshold of war - or finds itself stumbling into one - policymakers and military leaders need to address some hard realities.

There is almost no scenario in which the United States can successfully intervene in a war between China and Taiwan that will not leave our country in far worse shape than it is right now; in a worst-case scenario, American territory could be struck by nuclear missiles.

In testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee last week, Adm. Phil Davidson, commander of US forces in the Indo-Pacific, warned that Chinese military developments looked to him like a nation planning for a war.

Davidson added that he believed China would attempt to forcibly reunify Taiwan "in the next six years." To guard against this possibility, Davidson asked Congress to provide a whopping $27 billion in additional funding over the current defense budget.

Interesting article. The author fails to mention if we don’t fight for Taiwan now, we will eventually fight the Chinese later, under worse terms.

Also not mentioned, if China is on a war-footing, why do we continue to sell their wares on our shelves? Where is the strategic economic isolation needed in order to WIN?

There are two huge differences.

Unlike the Chinks, Hitler preached peace, which the English appeasers happily sucked up.

Two, unlike America’s ruling class re China, the English appeasers didn’t take bribes from, and were not in business with the Nazis.

“Dream on. Why weren’t nukes used in Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan or Iraq? I’ll wait for an answer...”

I’ll answer that. Because a nuclear capable country has not yet lost a war on their own soil. When that happens, they will use nukes. Inevitably.

Just give the Taiwanese nukes. Problem solved.

You’re right on everything. If I think you forgot one thing.

President Trump didn’t take sh*t from anyone. From the trade deals and tariffs, how he handled ISIS, Syria and the Middle East, building up our military. Up to and including his being adamant that, not only is the US not getting involved in other countries tries BS, he wanted to bring everyone home. And not just from Iraq and Afghanistan.

I think the world was on notice that if they did pick a fight with America, it wasn’t going to be the Clinton-Bush doctrine of an equal response.

Zero to the Wrath of God in a way that only the US military can do. To this day, ONLY the US military, regardless of how much China has built up their conscript military.

So, at the end of the day it all comes down to our CINC(Harris) and whether or not she and the rest of the Dems want to go to war with their benefactor, China.

Uncle Joe the Child Molester is owned by China and will never do anything to interfere with their plans for World Dominance.

He’s fully onboard with those plans.

Xi is Joe’s Sugar Daddy. And Hunter’s.

Should America’s response to anything China does be stronger than a stern letter to the UN, Xi will spill the chop suey about payoffs to the Biden Crime Family.

Yes, leadership is crucial. The left has no idea what kind of danger they’re leading us into.

Vietnam: not worth the blowback. Should have been used against Mao during Korea.

First strike: depends on the sub-tracking tech. If you have enough of your own submarines or some other way to track them, it’s possible

Gas isn’t a strategic weapon, although I’m fairly certain if Hitler had been able to gas London or Moscow effectively, he would have.

If Biden lets our sub fleet do its job, Taiwan will remain free. China fears our subs.

From the Fujian coast? My map doesn’t have the scale notation.

But Cuba to Miami is 90 miles, yet thousands have made that trek in leaky rafts, which is comparable at least to my friend’s midnight swim. Plenty of people do escape to Taiwan from the mainland, though I don’t know whether by boat or swimming, or how many die en route or are caught. The urge to escape communist regimes is hardly unusual.

Two thirds of the rebelling colonists considered themselves British, not American, and remained loyal to the Crown.

In the case of the American revolution, the revolutionaries had more passion for their cause.

One third is not a majority, just a large plurality.

I wonder whose side Bruce Lee would have been on regarding Taiwan. Silly question, but possibly relevant to the passion issue.

Satellite view shows about 200 kilometers from Xiamen to Yunlin County, with the island of Penghu County 50 kilometers off the coast of Taiwan, affording a possible refuge for weary swimmers. Penghu went to Taiwan as of 1945. Alternatively, you have a straight 200 klik swim from Qianhai Peninsula on the Mainland to Taichung City in Taiwan.

We can’t stop China from taking Taiwan.

Our navy seems to have a problem stay out of the way of super tankers and cargo ships.

I joked earlier about would we trade Taiwan for LA, but a better question is would we trade a carrier for it.

What is in the best interests of the nation to do?

The old British Empire was rather cutthroat and never to be trusted to act against their interests.

The best interest of our nation is to survive: to do that we need the strongest, most technologically advanced, most highly trained and competent armed forces in history and the will to use them. We need to stand by our allies and make our enemies know that we will stand by them.

Anything less, and you'd better start learning Mandarin and practice bowing to serve your new masters.

The Chinese on the island look down their arrogant noses at the backwater indigenous Taiwanese. Their loyalty is to China, though they dislike communism.

It’s a clusterfrack.
