The old British Empire was rather cutthroat and never to be trusted to act against their interests.
The best interest of our nation is to survive: to do that we need the strongest, most technologically advanced, most highly trained and competent armed forces in history and the will to use them. We need to stand by our allies and make our enemies know that we will stand by them.
Anything less, and you'd better start learning Mandarin and practice bowing to serve your new masters.
