Does the Covid risk justify the devastation caused by the lockdown?

div class="article_body">

In my sleepy suburban town, fourteen miles east of Oakland, California the COVID fallout to small businesses and restaurants had been nothing less than complete devastation. Dozens of empty storefronts stand as grim tombstones to ruined families, laid off employees, and bankrupt wholesalers and suppliers.

I read news snippets that COVID case are receding and COVID deaths are on the decline. But what are the real numbers in Contra Costa county? To put it mildly, the county government stats are carefully designed to misdirect and scare the casual reader. “Seven day rolling averages” and “cases per 100,000 folks for the past 14 days” are deliberate obfuscations of the normal world of how folks perceive numerical information. Most everyone comfortably uses percentages as a measure of comparison for two numbers. Ten percent is ten in one hundred or a dime out of a dollar. One percent is one in one hundred or a penny out of a dollar.

So, in Contra Costa county, what percentage of people have died from COVID, both in LTCF - long term care facilities - (311) and the general population (413) since this pandemic began a year ago?

In CoCo county, the 65 and older population is 178,630 persons.  And, of course, they make up the entire LTCF population. So COVID LTCF deaths make up .174% of those over 65 years old during the past year.

For the entire county, the percentage COVID LTCF deaths is .0267% for the past year.

For the entire county, the percentage of COVID deaths in non -LTCF is .0356% for the past year.

For all COVID deaths for the entire county the total percentage died is .0623% for the past year.

So. what is the 16- to 49-year-old percentage of COVID deaths for the county?

.0058% for the past twelve months.

Little late in the game to be asking this question... unless it was intended to be rhetorical.

Right...there’s a tremendous political and practical difference between ‘lockdown’ and ‘stranglehold’!!!

I can’t tell you how many times I have had this conversation with people:

“I don’t think the Covid risk justifies the devastation caused by the lockdown.”
“You don’t think the virus exists?”
“That’s not what I said. The virus is real, but I don’t think the Covid risk justifies the devastation caused by the lockdown.”
“So, you don’t think people are dying?”
“Of course people are dying. But I don’t think the Covid risk justifies the devastation caused by the lockdown.”
“Well, I guess the CDC is just lying to us! The whole thing is a hoax, is that it?? You’re a crazy conspiracy nut!!”

But, that’s MA for you.

You mean the risk that over 99% of the people that get it will survive it? A large majority of whom, will not even know they have/had it.

No same person can say that it can’t be deadly for some. I have a distant cousin that recently died from complications form it. Not sure if he had a comorbidity.

If it was as deadly as they made it out to be, there wouldn’t be one living employee in any grocery store, Lowe’s, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, Dunkin Donuts, or any other large chain business that has been allowed to stay open the whole time. They’d all be dead.

I hate to point out the obvious and act like an Ass, But WTF makes you think this worldwide lockdown had anything to do with the Flu??

No, the damage done by the lockdowns and shutdowns will eventually cost more lives than the disease itself. Further, the panic inspired by the lockdowns and shutdowns drove people to pack into Costco and grocery stores, spreading the disease faster than it ever would have without the shutdowns.

The proper way to go was what Sweden initially did: provide guidance based on the best medical science for how businesses and individuals can continue to operate while minimizing risk of transmission. And then update that guidance as new information is found, like the fact that surface transmission is virtually nil and outdoor transmission is extremely rare and unlikely.

The only government that didn’t utterly fail to act appropriately is the US Federal government under President Trump. President Trump made sure the states had everything they asked for (e.g. ventilators) while he accelerated the vaccine research that’s already saving lives today. THANK YOU PRESIDENT TRUMP!

I know, it's all or nothing with these people. To them every aspect of life should come to a halt until the virus is completely eradicated like smallpox. They can't grasp the concept that we can take reasonable actions to manage the virus without destroying people's lives, families, and livelihoods.

I travel and get a mixed bag, but by far the general attitude is “Enough, this was stupid.” People are angry. I don’t even ask, they volunteer.

I had it. Very mild symptoms. I now have antibodies to COVID.

The Karen’s say I need the shot. The shot is a copy of a teeny-tiny little bit of the Virus involved in cell binding. Natural antibodies arise from the whole virus’ envelope, membrane and capsid.

The COVID genome is around 30,000 bases in length. It would make sense that natural immunity would be superior to the mRNA shot because the body will learn to fight off any number of the viral bits. Prove me wrong.

I have had that exact conversation with some. Frustrating as hell. They try to tell you that you don’t care people have died of Covid.

Your screed, post #4, is factual and horrifying simultaneously. I have had similar conversations with
purportedly 'smart' people, and I am appalled at how obdurate these peers are in the ideology of the MSM
and government factotums.

I’ve run into a lot — a lot! — of still-scared-senseless California “men” and women who truly believe the devastation was essential. Some go so far as to say out loud that Newsom the Vile hasn’t done enough ... that more deliberate devastation and destruction must be done until not a single particle of the Communist Chinese Cooties remains in California ... then we will be “safe” ... maybe.

I get the exact same responses from Socialist Democrats in Wisconsin, too.

It’s maddening.

I get the same feedback.

My response is, there are people who die everyday from all kinds of causes but don't we destroy our economy, shutdown businesses, lock people in their homes, ruin people's livelihoods, fine and jail people for not wearing masks, all for a virus that has a 99.8% survivability rate. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Viral pandemics have been around forever. Some people get sick, some unfortunately die but most people don't have any symptoms and life moved on.

This time around, we've destroyed our booming economy, bankrupted our citizens and the virus is still around. Oops!

The response to this particular virus is the biggest mistake our government has ever made in my lifetime.

We will not return to normal until the PEOPLE rise up and yell ENOUGH!

We cannot wait for politicians and bureaucrats to say, “OK, it’s over”...because they never will. NEVER!

Disobey all mandates, “emergency orders” and other Covid-related acts of tyranny starting today.

I don’t think it’s worth it. About a 1% death rate, we have medicines and now we have vaccines. It’s been total overkill.

If I didn't read the news online, I probably wouldn't even know a viral pandemic existed. My wife and I don't wear masks. We don't stay home. My adult kids don't wear masks or lockdown. When we go out, people are in stores and eating out in restaurants without masks. We don't see the evidence of either the virus itself here or evidence of the response to it.

I pity the poor people who live in blue states like California where the governor is in training for tyrant of the year award.

I'm much luckier than most because we live in rural Florida where most people have ignored the politicians and media's relentless push to ruin our lives. Our governor is very popular for the very opposite reasons that California's Newsom is being recalled for.

They say elections have consequences. Well, where you live also makes a big difference in your quality of life.
