Car dealer Brad Sowers is spending money to prepare for the coming wave of new electric models from General Motors Co. He is installing charging stations, upgrading service bays and retraining staff at his St. Louis-area dealership to handle the technology-packed vehicles.
But when he considers how many plug-in Chevy Bolts he sold last year—nine, out of the nearly 4,000 Chevrolets sold at his Missouri dealerships—it gives him pause.
“The consumer in the middle of America just isn’t there yet,” when it comes to switching to electric vehicles, he said, citing the long distances many of his customers drive daily and a lack of charging infrastructure outside major cities.
As auto executives and investors buzz about the coming age of the electric car, many dealers say they are struggling to square that enthusiasm with the reality today on new-car sales lots, where last year battery-powered vehicles made up fewer than 2% of U.S. auto sales.
Most consumers who come to showrooms aren’t shopping for electric cars, and with gasoline prices relatively low, even hybrid models can be a tough sell, dealers and industry analysts say.
Auto makers are moving aggressively to expand their electric-vehicle offerings with dozens of new models set to arrive in coming years. Some like GM are setting firm targets for when they plan to phase out gas-powered cars entirely.

I am a geologist and a geochemistry expert specifically salt water disposal wells and salt water injection or brine production wells. I hold a master’s in hydrogeology as well. There are over 100,000 wells just in the Midland basin every one of which is actually a contaminated brine production well. Oil is a by product the water is the primary fluid produced the avg is 6 barrels of salt water to one barrel of oil I have seen over 100:1 and never less than one to one. Point is that produced brine is loaded with lithium over 300 cars worth per DAY per well with a hundred thousand wells to tap. One of my alma mater has technologies that more than one of my clients are in beta testing as we speak harvesting lithium salts in the Permian.
As for cobalt that metal is being removed from LIon cells. LFP cells use zero cobalt and the new Li manganese cells not only have 6 times the power density they also fast charge at ten times the rates of lithium nickel cobalt cathode.

Actually we need the federal government out of states operations like what happened in Texas. They are not living in Olympus like the Gods. And they don’t know what to do all the time....if any of it. They need to understand delegating like the Constitution says for the states.

If you are losing that many keys perhaps you should reprogram the system. You never know who has found them.

A typical popular gas station these days has 10-12 service bays, and plenty of traffic. Oftentimes I have to wait at the QT in order get a pump. We would have to at least double the number of recharges stations (even after accounting for home recharges, that take hours). Where? How?
Screw electric ANYTHING. Except a toaster !

You mean pumping stations? Gas stations are already converting to electric charging stations as need increases.
Where? Everywhere there is a gas station.
How? Run a cable to the charging station instead of three gas lines ...
That makes me wonder how do you recharge in thunderstorms or snowstorms? How about charging an EV during periods of civil unrest?
We started looking for a new car last fall, but when the election results came in suddenly switched to a hybrid.
With Biden at the helm, 32 mpg sounded like it was worth more than with Trump as President. Full electric is not in the cards for DW -- she does not like charging batteries even on her phone.
But when gas prices go up, or even when there is rationing, a high mpg vehicle is a good deal.
I get the next new car in a few years, and electric may be OK for me.

How do you gas up in thunderstorms?
During periods of unrest we see gas stations burning and rioters attacking customers. No problem when you can charge at home.
