Neither side has the appetite for all-out war but experts fear their intense strategic competition in which both conduct carefully calculated tests of the other's resolve could spill over into violent confrontation. And US military expert Lyle Goldstein warned there was a solid chance the US could lose the first fight with the People's Liberation Army in the event of a full-on conflict.
Prof Goldstein from the Naval War College's China Maritime Studies Institute in Newport, Rhode Island, told Newsweek: "It is very plausible to say there is no guarantee of victory in the first phases."
He said scenarios for such a confrontation varied substantially but warned all "are extremely challenging" for US forces.
He said: "I think China now has adequate forces, including air, missile, electronic warfare, spec ops, naval, undersea and nuclear to likely prevail in the first phase and perhaps in subsequent phases too."
He said weaponry had a "quite important" role but said China would gain the upper hand because of its favourable geography, greater will and the willingness to strike first."

We wouldn’t. Just stating the obvious. That is why we had to ration in WWII, since we did trade with Germany and many of the nations it annexed/invaded from 1939 - 1941. In a situation of rationing, the political will variable enters the equation and could have a detrimental effect if the will is weak.
The Fundamental Transformation of our military will take its toll if ever we really need them.
Killing People and Breaking things is no longer allowed.
Hi.
Doesn’t Formosa have two non nuclear ALCM and SLCMs?
Two kilo tons of high explosives each?
During the monsoon season, it would be a shame if anything happened to the Three Gorges dam.

Correction: The CIA gives them and all other countries our research and development, etc.
We’ve indoctrinated a couple generations into believing America is not worth defending. It will be a walk in the park for China.
That’s because the CIA gives tech., weapons systems, electronics, etc. information/development/etc. into infinity to China and all countries.
At the same time the CIA withholds all that/keeps it all away from the US knowledge/development/etc..
With what’s been graduating from the military academies, I’d say we might have a problem.
That is ALL because of the CIA.
That is because the CIA caused all that war/losses/etc. and getting our military killed at Korea and Vietnam.
The CIA/their contractors and their companies, etc. created that and all wars for them and the CIA to profit, etc. on and for the CIA to get our military killed, maimed, etc.: Heroin, opium, and lithium in Afghan., oil and antiquities in Iraq, and who knows what else in both those countries and what the CIA etc. got out of Korea and Vietnam too/ how many hundreds of million dollars, etc.
Yep, the capabilities, materials, money, etc. ALL given to them/coordinated, etc. by the CIA.
I look at that choke point at the Straits of Malacca and think how easy it would be for a single nuke sub to close off China’s Middle Eastern oil.
They “allow” that and homos/lesbians/butches/etc. to MAKE AND KEEP OUR MILITARY WEAK, ETC.
Yep!
Yep, they have made our military weak in a gazillion ways!! It has been and continues to be done ON PURPOSE BY THE CIA AND LOTS OF OTHER DOMESTIC AND FOREIGN ENEMIES.
Yep, most or all are brainwashed.
2000 tons of HE? Those must be some pretty big cruise missiles.
I don't know how much of that is true. I do know that China has grown exponentially because Americans want cheap products and were willing to allow our manufacturing base move overseas for years, not to mention politician personal deals.
Pres. Trump has said it and known it for years and is why he created incentives for companies to move back, tariffs, and re-negotiating trade with China. Being a past businessman myself and owning 3 small companies, I was so glad to see a non-politician in charge. His policies actually did make America great again.
Now back to the Deep State status quo.
These military geniuses don’t ever consider how easy it would be to starve China for oil. A couple of fast attacks off India could do it. For all the propaganda and bluster China is incredibly vulnerable. But such a narrative doesn’t justify even bigger defense budgets.
China will pull a Red Dawn.
