The IDF has completed the construction of the underground concrete wall between Israel and the Gaza Strip, as part of the effort to prevent terrorists from crossing into Israel via cross-border tunnels.
The concrete wall is just one component in the 60 km.-long barrier, which also includes a fence above the ground, advanced sensors both above and underground, and cutting-edge technologies meant to tackle the tunnel threat and stop terrorist infiltrations.
Senior IDF sources told The Jerusalem Post that almost 95% of the barrier has been completed, and that it will be operational in the near future. Hamas is believed to have a complex underground tunnel system throughout the Gaza Strip, which will be used to attack Israeli soldiers in a future ground battle inside the Strip. As a result, the IDF is preparing its soldiers for a combination of above-ground and below-ground warfare.
Any barrier, even underground, could be circumvented if given enough time and resources. The real protection is coupling a barrier with hyper-sensitive monitoring equipment that can detect tunnel construction. I suspect that the IDF has sensors that can detect an ant burrowing under the surface.
smoke out the rats
Gaza is dangerous. I was there in 2006 to do some work. While we were outside on the road the runs adjacent there the IDF had rolled up across our position inbetween us and the built up area. They did this due to military movement in Gaza directed towards us to head off any incident.
On the 23d of December in 2005, I got to go to Bethlehem. There were six of us escorted by 1.5 dozen rental-infantrymen... Between the Church of the Holy Serpecher (?) and the manger/Milk Grotto the Pali’s armed on rooftops shadowed our movements. There were anti-jew, anti-Israeli posters everywhere. Our team of security literally went into guns up and cover.
Personally I have no use for the militants running the West Bank and Gaza.
Maybe a 300 foot deep by half mile wide moat around all of the Gaza Strip on the Israeli side.
Two or three sub-kiloton-yield nukes would seal the border for a long time...
Great idea. It would provide an opportunity for some fishing too.
Why not divert sewage waste into Gaza tunnels? The whole place is a cess-pool.
LOL! That might be an improvement.
The Church of the Holy Sepulcher is in Jerusalem (on the reputed site of Jesus’ tomb). The Church of the Nativity is in Bethlehem.
“How hard would it be to flood with sea water any tunnels the Israelis find?”
exactly! flood underground breaches with sea water ... that contains sharks with lasers ... now THAT’S a movie i’d be willing to pay for ...
