LUBBOCK, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – Texas Governor Greg Abbott made the “statewide announcement” Tuesday afternoon that it’s time to open Texas 100% and he ended the mask mandate.

“Under no circumstance can someone be punished for not wearing a mask,” said Gov. Abbott.

Everywhere I go in the Tampa Bay area in Florida, everyone wears masks.

This is from the AARP website: "Florida recommends but does not require face coverings for the general public. Several cities and large counties, including Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and Hillsborough (which includes Tampa), have mask requirements, but local governments are barred from assessing fines and penalties for noncompliance under a Sept. 25 executive order by Gov. Ron DeSantis."

Tampa can declare a mask mandate but it's null and void because of the Governor's executive order. I'm in the panhandle, lots of people wear masks but plenty don't, it's up to the individual. Many stores like Publix and Wal-mart require them but that's their choice as a private business. I'm just thankful that Florida (and now Texas) is a bit of sanity in a sea of hysteria. For what it's worth, Florida's Covid trend numbers are some of the best in the country so obviously the lack of a mask mandate isn't hurting them.

In Dallas, the local district judge, Clay Jenkins (D), said nobody has to listen to the governor.

Here in Florida, where masks have been optional for months now, both Walmart and Home Depot have signs requiring masks to be worn in the store. I go into both without one, fully prepared to leave if the employees take exception.

To date, none have. Most of those poor folks know it's all BS, and they don't get paid enough to play mask police.

Exactly. We never had a statewide “mask mandate” but then individual cities did them...and DeSantis then forbade them to enforce them. In other words, you can fine people...but you can’t collect the fine.

The biggest problem is the people. They watch too much TV and are totally devoted to their masks, and even wear them outdoors (which even most of the cities didn’t require).

And of course the teachers’ union is fighting DeSantis every step of the way, despite the fact that Catholic and other religious and private schools have been open since August, the kids and teachers don’t wear masks outside and inside it depends on the school, we’ve had few to no cases traceable to the schools and no deaths. Nonetheless, this virus appears to attack only public school teachers, so they’re hanging out at home in terror, theoretically, and demanding their full pay.

I know some (young) teachers here and they’re terrified because they receive fear porn from the teachers union every day. The counties have got to start saying, “no teaching, no pay.”

Oh, no, no-the poor Karens will be crazier than s***house rats with nothing to scream about-better put them all on suicide watch...

No one in this rural area paid any attention to any mask mandate from day one-a few businesses in the small towns had signs asking shoppers to wear a mask, but no one cared if you didn’t wear one except a few frowning Karens-I avoided the city-SA-totally, like I do anyway-I heard from a couple of neighbors that the big box stores were full of mask nazis-just another good reason to avoid big cities...

My wife heard a rumor that Holcomb was going to make an announcement to that effect. I’ll believe it when I see it. By the way, Holcomb may or may not be a certified idiot, but the mayor of Indianapolis, Boss Hoggsett, has less wattage than a firefly. Really dim bulb, there.

If he’s into Computers, UT Dallas is the best bet in Texas. Also the most expensive in the state university system. Rice is probably the only private university that makes economic sense. For state universities, A&M and Texas Tech should be considered. For party schools, Texas State in San Marcos tops the list. For certain specialized ranch related degrees, Sul Ross in Alpine. University of Dallas (run by the Cistercians has a good reputation

In Louisiana, Tulane still has a good reputation, but I wouldn’t consider it cost effective. LSU Baton Rouge is probably about the only place worth traveling to in Louisiana these days. Maybe Grambling for football.

Of course, scholarships will change the equations anywhere.

Most of my restaurant/bar owner and worker friends are pretty upset about it, freaking out a lot. They liked the statewide and city mandates because it allowed small business owners to not be the “bad guy” in the situation if they have to enforce their own rules

I’m not sure what to think but I feel like we’ve already made this mistake in Texas twice relaxing the rules too early and it created a giant mess

Also we are only 49th in %vaccinated so there’s that

‘This decree is meaningless because the government doesn’t have this power.’

okay...so all those store owners requiring masks were doing so on their own behalf, not because the governor mandated it...

okay...

Looks like Texas it will be! His #1 criteria is in-person classes. (His #2 criteria is “not somewhere too cold.”)

He would not have liked it here a couple of weeks ago. (We sure didn’t!)

well, if you want to be accosted by low paid mask zealots, come here to PA and try to walk into Costco or BJ’s without the diaper...

“Thank you, Governor. It doesn’t erase the fact that you committed this folly in the first place, but I certainly applaud you for being one of the first to correct it.

I want to see the actual order, though, to make sure it prevents counties and cities from implementing their own lockdowns and mask mandates. Lina Hidalgo will do everything she can to hold on to her power grab in Harris County.”
