President Biden will announce Tuesday that pharmaceutical giant Merck will help make Johnson & Johnson’s single-shot coronavirus vaccine... according to senior administration officials...
Under the arrangement, Merck will dedicate two facilities in the United States to Johnson & Johnson’s shots. One will provide “fill-finish” services, the last stage of the production process during which the vaccine substance is placed in vials and packaged for distribution. The other will make the vaccine, and has the potential to vastly increase supply, perhaps even doubling what Johnson & Johnson could make on its own, the officials said...
It could easily take two months to get the “fill-finish” plant ready and a few more months to equip the other facility to make the vaccine, according to a person familiar with the process who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss it...
The Biden administration’s efforts to ramp up production of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine suggest that it sees the vaccine playing a bigger role in addressing the challenges ahead, such as the eventual need for children’s vaccines and possibly for boosters to counter virus variants, said a person familiar with the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss it.
Johnson & Johnson is conducting a trial of a two-shot vaccine regimen, with the doses given two months apart; results are not expected until at least May...
The administration officials indicated Biden would wield the powers of the Defense Production Act, a Korean War-era law, to give Merck priority in securing equipment it will need to upgrade its facilities for vaccine production, including the purchase of machinery, bags, tubing and filtration systems.

It looks like both of those company's capacity (Sanofi in Europe) will turn to producing the J&J vaccine.
Maybe J&J will be the competitor to AstraZeneca and the Chinese (SinoPharm, SinoVac) for the rest of world mass market, later this year.
Someone fill me in. Isn’t the J&J version NOT an mRNA type shot?
No, it uses a different mechanism to trigger antibody response. So the conspiracy theorists will have to come up with some new material for this one.
The J&J vaccine is as close to a traditional vaccine as has been proposed. No mRNA, but the grossly oversimplified version is that they basically took one basically harmless virus of a completely different type (it causes colds in humans but it’s so old most people are immune), gutted it and stuck the COVID-19 RNA/proteins in it. The COVID parts can’t operate the host virus and the host virus doesn’t work because it’s been gutted. The body takes it apart and learns from a ‘practice target’ what to look for and kill.
My understanding is that the J&J is NOT an mRNA vaccine - only Pfizer and Moderna are.
It seems to me that the article misreports its mechanism of action - whether deliberately or mistakenly, I don’t know.
My understanding is that J&J took a traditional approach of using an innocuous virus (a well known adenovirus), and grafted an identifying spike protein from COVID-19 onto it - an approach that has been used for decades with other vaccines.
They attack it by trying to tie it and any of the vaccines to fetal cell lines cloned from products of abortion.
Oh they have. They’re now claiming that recombinant vaccines and viral vector vaccines (each of which date back to the 1970s and 1980s) are “new” and “experimental” and “gene therapy”.
For some reason, they’ve stopped claiming that Bill Gates is putting mind control microchips in them. Maybe they were worried that made them sound crazy.
They who would use lies and distortions to strike fear and panic into peoples' hearts to convince them to alter their decision about what's best for their own health and wellbeing.
If "they" would stick to facts over fearmongering, then "we" could have a productive discussion about the pros and cons and risks. But "they" keep ranting about Bill Gates mind control microchips and alien DNA and genetic alteration and all sorts of similarly absurd kook conspiracy theory hogwash. So it becomes "us vs them" out of necessity to try and make sure people hear more facts than fearmongering.
So, given the three choices. Which should I take?
Oh that’s a new one to me. Hadn’t seen that one yet.
I’ll give that one a 6 out of 10 for creativity.
I don’t think anyone is getting a “choice” of the vaccines yet - if you want a vaccine you have to take whichever one is available at your appointment time.
Republican Wildcat is right that most people don’t have the option to pick and choose today, however that will likely change as supply begins to catch up to demand.
If you have a history of severe allergic reactions (e.g. you carry an EpiPen with you everywhere you go), probably best to avoid the Pfizer vaccine. It has a risk of a severe allergic reaction about 1 out of 90,000 people. In other words, chances are you’ll never know someone who has a bad reaction to it, but if that person is likely to be you based on medical history, don’t be that person.
If you have strong pro-life feelings, I would avoid the Johnson&Johnson and the Oxford/Astrazeneca vaccines as they both used fetal stem cells as part of their R&D/testing process. The Catholic Church has given Catholics an out for this (i.e. allowing them to take it) based on the 2005 “MORAL REFLECTIONS ON VACCINES PREPARED FROM CELLS DERIVED FROM ABORTED HUMAN FOETUSES”. The Oxford vaccine is also not as effective as other options.
Personally, I think the Moderna vaccine is the best overall as of now. It’s 95% effective and the only side effects I had from it were a sore arm. Some have reported significant fatigue lasting a day or two, particularly after the second dose.
We’ll probably have 2-3 more vaccines authorized for use by this summer. I can’t really speak to them until we find out which ones actually make it across the finish line before this thing is over. If you have any concerns, talk with your doctor about what makes the most sense for your individual medical history.
Yeah, but the more kooky conspiracy stuff claims this is a mind control chip. They seriously think Bill Gates is going to send out brain waves and make you do things. Mow his lawn? Wash his dishes? I don’t know; these kooky conspiracy theories usually don’t get that far in the thought process.
It isn’t used in all vaccines; it’s an adjuvant used in certain ones.
The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are pretty simple creatures: just a strip of mRNA which encodes for SARS-CoV-2 S-Protein and which is encased in a lipid (fat) shell. No adjuvants. No Interleukin-1.
Here’s a simply breakdown of the ingredients in the gen3 (mRNA platform) vaccines available today:
https://www.hackensackmeridianhealth.org/HealthU/2021/01/11/a-simple-breakdown-of-the-ingredients-in-the-covid-vaccines/
mRNA vaccines are called vaccines but they don't create antibodies. They're using the term very loosely for a reason. Antibodies can be created two ways. Either your body expelled the disease. Or giving a close facsimile of the disease. mRNA vaccines are really a time released drug that affects the symptoms. Kind of like NyQuil that last longer. The mRNA process of bonding to cells does have major side effects that should not be over looked.
Not a single word if that is even remotely correct. Where do you come up with this stuff?
It does indeed create antibiodies, and mRNA does not and, indeed, cannot work the way you described. The mRNA goes into cells with instructions to produce the spike protein found on the virus, but not the full virus like the virus's own mRNA would instruct the cells to do. The body creates antibodies to dispatch these spike proteins. The same antibodies would then recognize the spike proteins on the actual virus to provide immunity or at least a reduction in severity and shorten the time of the infection. mRNA is not at all durable and dissipates rather quickly.
