GREENBELT, MD (WBFF) - Six foreign nationals are facing federal charges for allegedly opening hundreds of fraudulent bank accounts, with the help of a bank employee, and using those accounts to try to deposit more than $700,000 that they stole or tried to steal from churches and other religious institutions.
The U.S. Attorney's Office announced today that a federal grand jury in Maryland has returned a superseding indictment charging Nicolae Gindac, 52, of Dania Beach, Florida; Mateus "Romi" Vaduva, 28, of Baltimore; Marius Vaduva, 26, of Baltimore; Marian Unguru, 36, of Baltimore; Daniel Velcu, 43, of Baltimore; Vali Unguru, 18, of Baltimore; and bank employee Diape Seck, 27, of Rockville.
The alleged fraud happened between June 2018 and January 2021, according to a press release.
The only churches identified in the press release as being victims were churches in Ellicott City and La Plata.
The indictment claims that Seck helped the co-conspirators open upwards of 412 checking accounts in the names of the churches.
The suspects allegedly used foreign-identity documents, often Romanian ones; some were their true identities and some are believed to be fictitious, according to the release.
The suspects allegedly stole checks from the incoming and outgoing mail of churches and other religious institutions, deposited the stolen checks into the fraudulent bank accounts, and then withdrew and spent the money.
If convicted, they each face up to 30 years in federal prison for conspiracy to commit bank fraud and wire fraud.

Read a story of a fella stealing from the church in the middle ages, the church had him skinned alive (in one piece) and nailed his hide to the door. THAT’s a lesson.

We have a mailbox in front of the church - they would drive up and steal the mail. They use a PO Box for Tithes now
