Republican Senators Propose Raising Minimum Wage From $7.25 To $10
Huffpost ^ | 2/23/21 | Tara Golshan and Dave Jamieson

Two Republican senators made a counterproposal to Democrats on the minimum wage Tuesday, offering to gradually hike the federal wage floor to $10 per hour while requiring employers to use E-Verify to crack down on undocumented workers.

The plan put forth by GOP Sens. Tom Cotton (Ark.) and Mitt Romney (Utah) falls well short of the $15 hourly wage that progressives in both the House and Senate are pushing for. Its immigration provisions could also draw stiff resistance from Democrats as well as business groups.

Romney, one of the few moderate Republicans known to cross the aisle to work with Democrats, argued that the more modest wage increase would prevent job losses and that the expanded use of E-Verify would discourage undocumented workers from entering the U.S.

An idiotic proposal. Give them their $15 an hour and if it leads to lost jobs then the Democrats can be blamed for it and it may make a good election issue.

It's also amusing that Cotton wants to make E-Verify mandatory when Arkansas doesn't require it now.

“Romney, one of the few moderate Republicans known to cross the aisle to work with Democrats...”

Define “few”.

honestly, I am tired of fighting this battle. Just give em the darn higher minimum. We all know it wont make a darn bit of difference, because it will just cause inflation. But it’s not worth losing elections over.

Right, like Romney cares about stopping illegal immigration. Who does he think he’s kidding?

I’m no fan of Mitt, but a middle ground proposal of this sort will never pass though it may split the Dem caucus which can only help. So probably no real harm in advancing this, given it’s DOA regardless.

AGAIN

This is the party that many of you are destined to support,
as if there is any sane reason to do so.

These people DO NOT represent your views.

Over and over and over and over and over and over and over
and over and over and over... again, they do not represent
Conservatism.

What will it finally take for you folks to get that through
your thick skulls?

E Verify was put in place years ago (’90’s) when I worked for a CPA and companies just didn’t do it. The bulk of clients was mostly in the restaurant business so a good reason not to follow it, I guess. If any company required it as a condition of employment, they didn’t give the right information to the employers and it was a wasted effort; borrowed SS numbers etc.

sure it will. Why do things cost what they cost? because the cost of anything is what someone is willing to pay for it. If you give people additional money, they are willing to pay more, because they have more.

This is what hospitals and college cost so much now. Insurance and Loans supplied more money, so the market reacted by adjusting the price up. College costs what it always did (its the part you pay above the loans) and same with medical care. Hospital stays cost the same also (its what you pay in your deductable)

LET’S BRING BACK THE 5 CENT CANDY BAR
When politicians particularly members of today’s in name only democrat party started pushing for a higher minimum wage. The focus should have been on purchasing power of the lowest coin of the realm. Each time it was passed the price of an item like an individual candy bar and everything else increased. What began at 5 cents in the 1940’s was when the minnimum wage was 50 cents an hour . As the rate steadily increased so did candy bar prices to what it is today. The result has always been since it began devaluing the purchasing power of the dollar.

The Stupid Party lives up to its name. They should counter with a $50 per hour minimum wage and make the Dems shoot it down.

Because the government *wants* inflation and in fact *needs* inflation and a debt fueled economy. The only way to cover the ever expanding deficits is by debasing the value of the dollar over time.

You got a point. We're not a free-market economy anymore anyways, might as well damn the torpedoes...

Show me one republican counter offer, acknowledging and promoting the Democrat’s position, that has split the democrat vote in the last quarter century. All this offer does is legitimize the democrats push for an increased minimum wage.

Several states have a minimum wage of $5.15 an hour.
..........
5 states have no minimum wage at all....disgraceful.
