The first data on the UK Covid vaccine rollout suggests it is having a "spectacular" impact on stopping serious illness, researchers say.
Within weeks, one shot reduces the risk of being admitted to hospital by at least three-quarters for the over 80s.
Researchers said this was particularly impressive as this age group was the most frail and least likely to have a strong immune response.
Monitoring of health staff also shows vaccination helps cut transmission.
So far a third of adults have received a vaccination in the UK....
The data from Public Health England (PHE) and Public Health Scotland (PHS) has been published on the day the government in England has set out its roadmap for lifting restrictions.
The research was carried out separately in the two nations, but both studies involved tracking those who had been vaccinated and comparing them against people who had not been.
The PHS study found that, by the fourth week after the first dose of either the Pfizer or AstraZeneca vaccines, the risk of being admitted to hospital had been reduced by 81%.
It was slightly higher when younger age groups were included.... The PHE team was also able to get an idea of what the vaccine was doing in terms of slowing the spread of the virus.
Health staff who were vaccinated were routinely tested every two weeks whether or not they had symptoms.
One dose reduced the risk of catching the infection by 70% - if an individual is not infected they cannot pass it on.
Dr Mary Ramsay, head of immunisations of PHE, said: "We should be very encouraged by these initial findings..."

Very good news. But I’m still going to wait, see what long term effects really are.
As compared to 13.1% who have received the vaccine in the US?
The U.S. has administered 43,628,092 first doses (13.1%) and 18,865,319 second doses (5.7%)
Sounds more like a therapeutic than a vaccine.
Ivermectin or HCQ do the same.
I don't think we have too much choice. This is the DMV at its best (worst) here in the US.
(I'm too not anxious to receive the vaccine, either.)
Your statement is quite untrue
I get my 2nd shot of Pfizer tomorrow. I got the 1st shot 3 weeks ago and had only a sore arm for three days.
I'm 77 years old and have questioned every little thing that has happened in the last three weeks as possibly being a side-effect of the COVID-19 shot.
There wasn't one thing that could be blamed on the shot.
Anyway, that's been my experience, FYI.
Thank you. I am 69 and anxious to hear about first-hand experiences.
But Dr. Fraudxci says we still need to “mask up” for the foreseeable future.
The COVID alternate reality around here is astonishing.
I've stopped commenting because it does no good.
If the data holds up, Operation Warp Speed will be one of the most outstanding programs by a President (war excepted), EVER.
The govt health agencies are saying the Vaccine is the Second Coming. I’ll wait until some trustworthy organization says so.
I’m with you. I am commenting minimally because id the breathtaking inaccuracies.
Did you see in this article though after one injection the most at risk did not contract disease. This plus the Israeli and American data showing a decrease in infection. It appears that the “does not prevent infection” narrative is falling apart
Be well and stay safe. I think we are quite close to the end of this pandemic.
In any case, I'm not going to beta test Bill Gates' dream scheme.
There’s gotta be something lost in translation here, as a bit of the article is coming across to me as gibberish.
***********see here**********
“It found vaccination reduced the risk of symptomatic infection by 57%; for those infected the risk of being admitted to hospital was reduced by 40% and then if people were admitted to hospital it reduced the risk of dying by 56%.”
Ok, I don’t think the word “risk” is appropriately used here. Nonetheless, let’s forge on.
Pretend we start with 10k old farts like me
Once vaccinated, the risk of symptoms is decreased by 57%. That implies 43% still get sick and look like it. That means 4,300 oldsters not doing well.
The risk of those needing to go to a hospital is decreased by 40%. Umm, OK, that means 60% still go ? That means 2580 are admitted?
And, of those 2580 admitted the risk of death is decreased by 56%. Uhh, that means 44% still kick the bucket? This = 1,135.
So, once vaccinated you have an 11% chance of dying ?
According to the CDC (https://www.acsh.org/news/2020/11/18/covid-infection-fatality-rates-sex-and-age-15163) elders don’t exceed a 1% chance of death until they are older than 64 years. And, that is with no vaccination.
As I said, something is seriously lost in translation.
The author is likely a Brit. That explains it. They drive on the wrong side of the road and have problems with maths.
The Brit’s include a smattering of maths and statistics into almost everything they publish.
And we should believe the “government” (ANY government) on this?
We’re from the “government” and we’re here to help you.
“The first data on the UK Covid vaccine...”
“Data” on everything COVID has been so reliable. /S
But, All the Lemmings will believe it.
and to the SIREN study on health workers itself:
Effectiveness of BNT162b2 mRNA Vaccine ...
And to the Scottish study:
Effectiveness of First Dose of COVID-19 Vaccines Against Hospital Admissions in Scotland
These may or may not resolve your puzzlement.
If you believe anything that comes out of the LYING Media, you just might be a STUPID Liberal
