I hasn’t opened as far as I am concerned.
Democrats know that they may struggle to maintain their majorities in the House and Senate in next year’s midterm elections. That’s one reason Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser has called for a statehood bill to be put on President Joe Biden’s desk during his first 100 days in office. That’s why I was surprised that Eleanor Holmes Norton, Washington’s longtime delegate to Congress and perhaps the biggest statehood booster around, told me she wants to proceed slowly. Norton, who doesn’t get full voting rights in the chamber, said she’s convinced that the Democrats are going to expand their majorities in the House and Senate in 2022. And she wants more time for statehood advocates to build up public support. She’s worried that any vote will fail if Congress doesn’t feel pressure from the American people, or if advocates force a vote ahead of clearer national priorities, such as COVID-19 relief. A setback like that, she fears, could end the momentum that’s been steadily building for the 51st-state movement—so she wants Biden to stay away from statehood for now. “If he jumps D.C. statehood ahead of the two or three issues that have priority, people will think he’s crazy,” she said. “We’re not ready to have him jump the issue on D.C. statehood yet. We have to do more homework in the Senate.”
I thought DC statehood was a Constitutional issue since it was created by the USC.
How big would this state be, the size of a mid-size city?
I dunno and to lazy to look.
From what i remember DC is a small square on the edge of Maryland on the Virginia border.
Mitt, Susan Collins, Murkowski and others pushing each other down, stepping over each other “Me! Me! I’ll vote for DC statehood. Look at me over here.”
Heads I win, tails you lose.
I like the idea of giving all of DC except the actual capital back to the surrounding states i.e. Maryland and Virginia. DC has already corrupted those states anyway so no harm done.
“The biggest obstacle to D.C. statehood is the filibuster...”
It will take a whole lot more than simple majorities in Congress to pull this turkey of an idea off. If the residents of D.C. yearn for Senators and Representative, they can move a few miles away and have both.
The District of Columbia does not even make a decent COUNTY, let alone anything like a “state”. Part of the District was originally in Virginia, but was ceded back to Virginia and made into Arlington County, as the Federal government was never going to grow large enough to ever use all that area.
Suggestion: Carve out a triangle within the District that includes ONLY the grounds of the White House, the Capitol Hill complex, and the Supreme Court building, then cede the rest back to Maryland, which can then be turned into “District County” and subject to the laws of Maryland.
Under the terms of its admission, Texas has the right to split itself into 5 states. That should be the response if this happens.
It would be a direct violation of the Constitution (if we still had one)
The suggestion that a middling sized city can or should be be a state is asinine from teh start.
Give it to Maryland.
(Sorry MD FReepers)
I’m going to theorize Wash, DC is going to be bulldozed and turned into a national park.
Anyone who votes for legislation (as opposed to a Constitutional Amendment that would need to be ratified by three fourths of the States) that would make the District of Columbia a State should be immediately removed from Congress.
ML/NJ
To exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular States, and the Acceptance of Congress, become the Seat of Government of the United States, and to exercise like Authority over all Places purchased by the Consent of the Legislature of the State in which the Same shall be, for the Erection of Forts, Magazines, Arsenals, dock-Yards, and other needful Buildings
[seems to me an amendment may be required.]
Back in 1959 Alaska was granted statehood along with Hawaii to preserve the senate balance and overcome political resistance. That was 62 years ago.
Maybe they’ll make Big Hotels States as well
Our State Motto - Only we can have a fence and the military to keep undesirables (like US Citizens) out!
Then maybe eastern Washington state could break off from Washington and become a separate state. There are other possibilities as well. Why can’t conservatives play this game?
