Paratrooper entangled in high-voltage power lines, requiring rescue
Fox 10 News (Phoenix) ^ | February 19, 2021 | Fox 10 Staff

A dangerous and unusual rescue took place south of Phoenix on Feb. 19, after a paratrooper got tangled in some high-voltage power lines.

The incident happened south of Arizona City. Officials with the Eloy Fire District say it happened early in the morning, and that the troopers were on a training mission when one man's parachute got tangled.

Crews had to wait more than three hours to even attempt the rescue just to make sure the power was turned off. Firefighters eventually used a 100-foot ladder and bucket truck to get the man to safety.

The person who was rescued was later flown to a Valley hospital for treatment.

Glad this guy is ok. I never got tangled up in any power lines on any of my military jumps, however, during a night jump into the Arizona desert I did manage to land in the middle of a covey a quail. I hit the ground and they all burst into the air and flew off in every direction like the proverbial bats outta Hell...startled the crap outta me too!

They probably have so much ‘diversity training’ now in the military that they don’t have time for how to safely control a jump. Expect more of these accidents.

I’ve heard that only two things fall from the sky. Bird poop and fools!

And yes, I’ve been a fool and it was amazing!

Paraglider pro tip: never look at obstacles, always look at the landing spot. People tend to hit whatever they are fixated on.

He was suspended for over three hours?
Boy, I’ll bet he was glad to see a Rest Room once all the excitement was finally over.

Keep your feet and knees together. You’ll be fine.

I’ve never been a paratrooper, but I don’t imagine it’d be very comfortable hanging in your harness for three hours, never mind how “uncomfortable” you’d be hanging in the midst of a bunch of 50,000 volt power lines! I mean, those harnesses weren’t made for hanging out and chillin’ in the breeze for three straight hours, were they?

OK, I wasn't Airborne, I was Field Artillery.

Why would you jump out of a perfectly good airplane? 😁😁😁😁😎😎

First jump was on my 18th birthday. Wow, what a way celebrate. I was the next to last out of that bird that day and the Lt just behind me streamered and broke his back. 101 recorded jumps, Korean and US Master Parachutist Wings, back surgery in Okinawa, ankle surgery in Hong Kong, knee surgery in DC and spinal fusion at Duke Medical Center. Hope I never “have” to get the hip replacements they told me I needed over years ago.

I loved the 82d Abn Div, SF and XVIII Abn Corps in general.

Some of the weirdest jumps were in Panama where the elephant grass is a dozen feet high and watching a guy from the unit streamer in and literally bounce up in the air - 15 minutes the indestructible guy came up the parachute turn in point and was choppered out with any injuries - we had 18 broken feet, ankles, legs on that jump but nothing happened to the guy that streamered.

Oh, I imagine hitting power wires resolved any bodily evacuation problem at the outset.

Thank you for your service.

I loved the scene in “Band of Brothers” where Jimmy Fallon’s character is rounding up supplies for the guys heading into Bastogne. He tells Dick Winters “ if you go there, you’ll be surrounded”. Winters says “Were paratroopers, we’re supposed to be surrounded.”
