Son has solar panels on his roof in Buda Texas. They became inop when snow covered while the power was out.

If the problem was the conventional power plants, how do the northern states and Canada keep the lights on in the winter?

solar + micro-grids + battery storage
First, start with coal fired power plants. Then, get diesel generators for your home. Next, add some solar panels and batteries. Oh what the heck throw in a few wind turbines with diesel heaters. THEN, you are really good to go.

The technology exists to allow people to bring electricity into their homes from an electric vehicle’s batteries for up to three to five daysAnd it works even better if you keep your car plugged in and charging in the meantime.

natural gas storage tanks would eliminate the problem. Texas doesn’t store it like most places do since they figure they can just pump it when they need it. But it got so cold they couldn’t pump it, so they were stuck.

First of all - the major problem in Texas is their environment is not hardened for this type of heat. Water in the Natural Gas pipes is freezing into ice and stopping the flow. Pumps and wellheads are freezing because they are outside.
But, without improvements of at least an Order of Magnitude (10 times) solar power and batteries will not be an option.

Elon musk set up some huge battery farms in Austrailia that cured a lot of their problems.
Wonder if that would help.

lol...so, wonder if these people considered weather events such as hail storms? Extended periods of cloud cover/rain such as in tropical season. Ice/snow covered panels.
