No excerpt from Bloomberg allowed, story here, archived here. The article says that in 2020, 49% of students who had a parent with a bachelor's degree submitted test scores, compared to 30% of first-generation applicants, down from 79% and 71% in 2019. Here are the percentages of students submitting test scores by race:
58 Asian
48 White
33 "Latinx"
33 American Indian
31 Black
White people and Asians that don’t play sports need to submit their scores if they are good. Everyone else is better off not submitting scores unless they are very good.
They are the best test and predictor of success given appropriate placement, using the scores.
Sorry but I don’t know what you mean “submitted scores”.
I was JUST thinking of this the other day.
Why has SAT been replaced by ACT?
My nieces several years ago did ACT. What? What is that?
The “scores” are TINY. What in the world can one devine from a small score range?
Maybe we didn’t need 1400 points as in SAT, but the scores of “18” and “19” seem ridiculous!
What “they”?
Headline was about SAT specifically disappearing? Or is the article a complete non-sequitur from that?
Now that college admissions is test optional, some applicants send (”submit”) their SAT or ACT scores to college admissions offices, and some do not.
Can’t have tests which differentiate ability unless they involve basketball.
ML/NJ
I wish we would concentrate on the test scores and forget entirely about race. What the test shows is how well people do on the test. Making any comparison to a race is not that much of the story. Looking at the rate of change of a race may be useful, but again its just one part of the person. And unless taking tests is the job they are seeking, it is not all that wise to elevate test taking too highly.
Many moons ago I went off to community college.
What did you get on the SAT?
I didn’t take it.
ACT?
I didn’t take it.
I’m not sure I know what to do.
Admit me and I will either pass or fail?
Okay
I scored a 28. Second in my class. I didn’t apply to Harvard though. I don’t regret that.
All three of my teen boys did better on their SATs (with no prep) than their GPAs would indicate. In one case, MUCH better.
It’s too bad the SAT is falling out of favor. Sometimes boys hate high school, are late bloomers, but thrive in college where they can study what they want to. (Like mine). SATs can reveal some “hidden” readiness for college.
The test scores in question SAT and ACT are good predictors of academic success. If you want a lot of your students to graduate with decent gpa’s, these scores will help you pick them.
Of course, with grade inflation and homemade “majors”, it is becoming a snap to get through college without having to learn much of anything, so perhaps the tests really are becoming superfluous.
They don’t submit their scores because they suck ass.
But they take the test.
I do not disagree, its just that a test is only one thing. I did well on tests, I did well in sports. Doing sports took time away from other academic achievements. Yikes, I did not live up to my test scores. See? I was only sorry that so many people want to use race on one axis and test scores on another. In my case it was not focusing on the right things and only having so much resources to apply that caused me to not succeed highly in college. I somewhat regret this, as I did not achieve as much in my career because my college marks worked against me.
On the other hand, playing in competitive sports was very enjoyable, and I am glad for this experience. So my attitude is that test scores need to be evaluated in combination with a lot of other things to help guide us in our endeavors.
Disgraceful. I am shocked that is an actual test question.
Many people in the Education Tesing and tutoring industry are going to go broke.Time to learn to code.

I was just kidding! That’s not a real SAT question. But I suppose it says something about our society today that folks would think it really is an SAT question.
They = SATs. Seems clear?
