City officials in Abilene, Texas, announced Monday night that all city water services had been shut off due to the historic winter storm and subsequent power outages.
The city water services were shut down at 7 p.m. local time "as a result of power outages from both power sources at all three of [the] water treatment plants," the city said in a statement.
Officials said they do not know when power and water will be turned back on.
When the water is restored, the city said residents would be required to boil water before using.
Abilene, which is located about three hours west of Dallas, has a population of more than 123,000 people, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Hours before the water was shut off, officials pleaded with residents to only use "essential" water because the city's supply was running dangerously low.
"Your efforts to conserve water will assist the City in ensuring continued water service. Failure to curtail usage will result in loss of water service," the city said in a statement earlier Monday. "Please forego baths, showers, and other non-life sustaining uses. Use water only for drinking and cooking."
Abilene and much of Texas are still without power as the state deals with record cold.
"If you are currently experiencing an outage, you will likely be out of power for an extended period of time while this state of emergency continues," AEP Texas, a utility company, said in a statement Monday.

Probably just frozen pipes.
This will be used as fodder for the left to demand federal management of Texas. Watch and see.
Water and electricity off.
That’s only the foundation for modern civilization...
Nobody thought to add a diesel or natural gas generator as backup power?
That borders on criminal irresponsibility.

Good thing we no longer need that XL-pipeline!
‘Shut off water..’
So, Abilene is a dry town!
My wife and I were talking about this last night.
I have a dollar that says when those turbines finally thaw out at least 25% of them will be damaged beyond repair.
Any takers?

You guys need to dig up T Boone Pickens and hang him...
How are they going to secede from the union if they’re not self sufficient enough to keep utilities running?
Trump wanted and got US energy independence.
I think every State needs to be energy independent.
several mini nuke reactors would do the trick.
Probably so. Freezing and thawing cycles in the seals and gears will probably ruin them, or require $$ rebuilds.
Hell due to the rolling black outs, we are loosing water every couple hours. We just installed a new bigger pump and my generator will not carry it. I am kicking myself in the arse for not buying a higher capacity genset.
Other than that we are weathering well. Got the oil fired lanterns going and wood stacked on the porch. Cannot say the same for the cows. They looked like popsicles with icicles hanging down their side
Real nice yesterday. No phones and no internet. Quiet and peaceful.
Ah, so, ahem, how do they flush the toilet?? How much ‘crap’ has piled up in their toilets over the last 24 hours? Geez Louise.....
If the weather weren’t so crappy I’d take a drive west to DeKalb County and check out the “wind farm” that’s a couple miles from our gun club just to see of those things are working.
We have had 30-40 mph winds and temps right around 0 for a week or so.
Thank God most of our electricity comes from nukes around here.

If they get iced and are running in gusts, they run a big risk of destruction, so they have to be shut down until the weather is better and all the ice is gone.
But if those seals are breached by freeze/thaw cycles, they can be ruined to the point of requiring rebuilds.
Consider further that Texas intentionally isolated it’s grid from other networks. The grid in Texas used to be run by adults. This is stupid.

Wait until Texans find out that their wind generators won’t be coming back on line as soon as the temps rise above freezing. The freeze-thaw cycles in their seals and gears will require careful inspection and possible rebuilding.
