Road Trip: Marine Corps Support Facility Blount Island, Florida

Blount Island Command (BICmd) is responsible for the United States Marine Corps' Maritime Prepositioning Ships (MPS) Maintenance Cycle operations and oversight of the Marine Corps Prepositioning Program-Norway (MCPP-N). It is located on the east side of Blount Island.

The concept of a Maritime Prepositioning Force (MPF) was first envisioned during the late 1970s. The initial program, established in 1979, was called the Near Term Prepositioning Force (NTPF). NTPF used existing operational force equipment and supplies to load on available ships belonging to the Military Sealift Command (MSC).

These ships were based in Diego Garcia and initial equipment and ship maintenance was done in Naha, Okinawa and Subic Bay Naval Base. The Marine Corps immediately recognized the advantages of prepositioning equipment and seized the opportunity to improve combat readiness.

FLblountisland4

The base falls under the command of the Marine Corps Logistics Command located at Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, Georgia. The portion of the Blount Island currently occupied by Blount Island Command began transitioning to become a Marine Corps Logistics Base in 2005.

As of 2010, $55 million had been spent on projects to expand capabilities and improve security, including better fencing and gate access. Blount Island offered a variety of advantages not available at any other site, including:

A private slipway with 5 large vessel berths located only 7 nautical miles from the St. Johns River outlet

Proximity to Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, Georgia

Access to a large industrial base and Navy support structure in Jacksonville, Florida.

Over 33 acres of staging immediately adjacent to the 1,000-foot pier and maintenance area.

FLblountisland3

Each Maritime Prepositioning Ship (MPS) can supply a Marine Expeditionary Unit (2,200 members) for 30 days. Ships are loaded with thousands of different items required for logistical support. The vessel then departs Blount Island and journeys to an assigned ocean location, where they await a destination. If the ship is utilized in a mission, it will return to Blount Island to be resupplied and the cycle begins again.

Every 36 months, all cargo is offloaded and the ship goes into dry dock. Every piece of equipment is inspected, cleaned and tested. Vehicles are repaired and painted. If upgrades are available, they are applied or items are swapped out. The work is performed by 250 military/government employees assisted by 1,000 civilian contractors.

Thinking Differently

Bible in a Year:

Do not conform to the pattern of this world.

Romans 12:2

During college, I spent a good chunk of a summer in Venezuela. The food was astounding, the people delightful, the weather and hospitality beautiful. Within the first day or two, however, I recognized that my views on time management weren’t shared by my new friends. If we planned to have lunch at noon, this meant anywhere between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m. The same for meetings or travel: timeframes were approximations without rigid punctuality. I learned that my idea of “being on time” was far more culturally formed than I’d realized.

All of us are shaped by the cultural values that surround us, usually without us ever noticing. Paul calls this cultural force the “world” (Romans 12:2). Here, “world” doesn’t mean the physical universe, but rather refers to the ways of thinking pervading our existence. It refers to the unquestioned assumptions and guiding ideals handed to us simply because we live in a particular place and time.

Paul warns us to be vigilant to “not conform to the pattern of this world.” Instead, we must be “transformed by the renewing of [our] mind” (v. 2). Rather than passively taking on the ways of thinking and believing that engulf us, we’re called to actively pursue God’s way of thinking and to learn how to understand His “good, pleasing and perfect will” (v. 2). May we learn to follow God rather than every other voice.

Reflect & Pray

How would you describe the values and assumptions that surround you? What would it look like for you to not conform to the world’s ways and to instead follow Jesus’ ways?

God, I don’t even recognize my assumptions and values most of the time. Help me to live out Your truth and Your mind in it all.

Glad you’re getting power at all. I’ve been following a live stream about the power situation in TX for a while this afternoon and evening and it isn’t good. I wish you MUCH luck!

Howdy, lightman.

I hope you get lucky and miss out on the “fun” too! It looks like it’ll be a close call.

We barely squeaked by today.

Howdy, mayor.

It looks like you’re getting hammered by this mess. :-(
Were you able to work or are you stuck at home?

Howdy, PRO.

Have your temps been as frigid as elsewhere in the northern parts or did this mess move far enough east to get you out of the brunt?

We’ve been right on the east edge of it all and have missed the frigid temps. It’s cold but not brutal.

We have had in the area, but we haven’t had ours go out yet. I’m holding my breath. I know you’re listening to Steve, so you know how many millions ARE without power.

I can’t imagine the misery of the homeless and the livestock. My kitties are fine. They know what to do. :)

Hi radu!

We had 4 more inches that fell overnight, no big deal, the sun was out and it warms my place up shining in through the windows.

More snow is expected but by next week we may be pushing 55-60 degrees which unfortunately may result in some flooding.

Yeah it's cold, been inside except for some shoveling.

Son's over for dinner now and we're hanging playing video games.

Hope all is well with you.

You’ve been lucky! I hope the luck holds. It seems like once it goes out somewhere, it’s staying out. BAD situation in TX right now.

I have a bad feeling they’ll find a lot of frozen homeless once they’re able to get out and about to check on them. Farmers will lose some livestock too. :-(

I’m glad the kitties are ok and thrilled about Coal showing up. WHEW! Are you going to let Li’l Bit spend the night inside again? Bet she’d appreciate it.
