The Public Utility Commission of Texas urged Texans turn their thermostats down to 68 degrees or lower, close shades and blinds to cut down on the amount of heat loss through windows, turn off and unplug non-essentials appliances and lighting, and avoid using large appliances such as washers and dryers.
“The lowest temperatures Texas has seen in decades necessitate a shared response across the state, from households to factories,” PUC chair DeAnn Walker said in a written statement. “Along with the tools ERCOT uses to maintain the reliability of the grid, common-sense conservation also plays a critical role in our state’s endurance of this challenge.”
The water heater temperature should also be lowered, Atmos Energy reminded folks in a tip-sheet published Saturday. Up to 25 percent of energy consumed in the home can come from the water heater, according to the Dallas-based utility company. The maximum temperature should be at 120 degrees

Very few states can afford to have the kind of surplus power needed for events this unusual. People would rebel at the rate levels required to build up the grid.

But that assumes there will be natural gas available. The article says “limited natural-gas supplies available to generating units.”
The problem is they have been shutting down all the coal and nuclear generating plants in favor of high-efficiency gas fired combined cycles (even those are being shut down in California). Pipelines cannot be built. Uncle Joe Stolen is banning fracking everywhere and exploration on federal lands. The gas shortage problem is going to get a LOT worse.

I think double is inadequate. Its barely enough now. Add millions of cars trucks trains, planes(?), boats, ships, and billions of devices and we’d need as many coal fired power plants, nuclear plants and gas plants as we could build as fast as we could and maybe never catch up.

41" of wet, heavy snow.
Brought down lots of power lines and trees across the roads.
I was out for 5 days, many for a month but most here in the country are prepared.
Talked to some college students from the small state university in a nearby town.
They rented a house a few miles down the road.
"We almost froze! It was horrible!"
I asked why they didn't build a fire in the back yard, considering they were surrounded by miles of woods.
"Oh!We didn't think of that" was their answer.
