The Electric Reliability Council of Texas emphasized the need for people to reduce energy use...
As temperatures dropped to near-record lows Sunday, electricity operators warned that demand could overwhelm the state’s power grid and force rotating power outages.
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which operates the state’s power grid, emphasized the need for Texans to reduce energy consumption.
“We are experiencing record-breaking electric demand due to the extreme cold temperatures that have gripped Texas ... At the same time, we are dealing with higher-than-normal generation outages due to frozen wind turbines
...
If power reserves fell too much, an energy emergency alert might be necessary, allowing ERCOT to implement rotating power outages to save energy.

The Public Utility Commission of Texas urged Texans turn their thermostats down to 68 degrees or lower, close shades and blinds to cut down on the amount of heat loss through windows, turn off and unplug non-essentials appliances and lighting, and avoid using large appliances such as washers and dryers.
“The lowest temperatures Texas has seen in decades necessitate a shared response across the state, from households to factories,” PUC chair DeAnn Walker said in a written statement. “Along with the tools ERCOT uses to maintain the reliability of the grid, common-sense conservation also plays a critical role in our state’s endurance of this challenge.”
The water heater temperature should also be lowered, Atmos Energy reminded folks in a tip-sheet published Saturday. Up to 25 percent of energy consumed in the home can come from the water heater, according to the Dallas-based utility company. The maximum temperature should be at 120 degrees

Here we go. Practically all of the apartments in Texas use electric heating, and electric resistance heating uses far more power than even air conditioning...not very smart considering that the state is absolutely awash in natural gas.
Wait till the lunatics flood the country with electricity sucking cars.
Just imagine millions of electric vehicles added to the grid - who get priority? The power to heat homes or the demand for vehicle charging?
We didn’t have these kind of rolling blackouts in the 50’s and 60’s...and we didn’t have stupid people like John Kerry in positions of power either. (might be a connection)
Hey, let's add millions of EV's to the demand.
They are doing it to themselves! To many Californian’s moving here and in to BIG 4 and 5 bedroom houses. Building without caring is killing the state.
Have us use jet fuel to fly helicopters over the frozen / expensive / not green wind mills - just to start..
“...and water heaters...”

I have Cold Uticaria (Cold Allergy).
Though my beloved husband runs hot and we keep the temps low in the rest of the house for his benefit, we have my Quiet Room with multiple heaters running day and night.
And we have a gas water heater. Told my beloved there was no way I was able to take cold showers and wasn’t going to risk not having hot water.
The few times we were installing new heaters I was very hard to live with in the same house. Folks couldn’t talk me into giving up my gas water heater. Aside from that, gas freaks me out. LOL
It shouldn’t, I realize... it just does....
If we lose electricity we have the Ben Franklin out in the front room.
One of these days I’m going to have a Ben Franklin installed into my kitchen.
Why not just crank up them wind tur-bines Tex.
California is either trying or has coded out gas from future
homes.
It’s a fossil fuel you know.
Never mind that it is clean burning and supplied about 7.00%
of California’s power. No telling how much power homes
were using of the total power supply. Maybe that 7.00% is
it.
That makes dam turbines, nuclear plants, and now natural
gas power supplies that are not allowed in California for
power generation.
They’re doing away with ICE vehicles too. It’s going to
be a real hoot when all these special interests meet in a
busy power intersection going 238 mph.
All them dang frozen windmills out in West Texas.
MORE WIND!! MORE SOLAR! KILL THOSE PIPELINES!!
My son says the power is out in Brownwood.
Musk - Tesla said that the grid would have to ~ double in size if the government mandates electric cars.
The whole damn country is going to be covered with those monstrosities. The same “environmentalists” who went nuts over a few offshore oil rigs ruining the view of the ocean accept MILLIONS of these machines blighting our once-beautiful vistas all over the country. There is little that pi$$es me off as much as that!
Coming your way... https://www.king5.com/article/tech/science/environment/seattle-new-building-energy-codes-ban-fossil-fuels/281-2a928b2d-6328-489d-9e12-a00a5013e4dc
So what? Who cares how others live? Go live in a cave if you’re that against other people’s living styles.
Texas should be building power plants, not letting liberal nancyboys like yourself denigrate how others live.
That’s insulting and degrading for Texas to have to have a rolling blackout. If that happens, they need to run the state house in Austin out on a rail. There is absolutely no excuse for an energy rich state that’s relatively capitalist to run low on electricity.
Wait until the electric cars come aboard. How many windmills and solar panels does it take to charge one car per day?
